FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ARTHUR GIANELLI ANNOUNCES OPENING OF ZAKI HOSSAIN CENTER FOR HYPERTENSION, DIABETES AND VASCULAR DISEASE AT NUMC, ADVANCING THE CARE OF NASSAU COUNTY RESIDENTS, PARTICULARLY THE MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED AND UNINSURED, WHO SUFFER FROM THE INTERTWINED EPIDEMICS OF HYPERTENSION, DIABETES AND VASCULAR DISEASE

COMBINATION OF OUTREACH, EDUCATION AND CLINICAL CARE WILL GREATLY BENEFIT OUT PATIENTS WHO SUFFER FROM VARIOUS METABOLIC CONDITIONS BY COMPLETE AND TIMELY ACCESS TO CLINICAL SERVICES AND PREVENTION CARE PROGRAM, WITH NUMC'S INSTITUTE FOR HEALTHCARE DISPARITIES AS A SIGNIFICANT PARTNER

ZHCHDVD, THANKS TO ZAKI HOSSAIN'S GENEROSITY, TO BE HUB OF CLINICAL AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES, TO ACT AS A PARTNER AND RESOURCES FOR PHYSICIANS IN THE COMMUNITY AND TO DEVELOP INTERCONNECTED ACTIVITIES WITH OTHER RELEVANT NUMC SPECIALITIES SUCH AS OPHTHALMOLOGY,  NEPHROLOGY, CARDIOLOGY, NEUROLOGY, ENDOCRINOLOGY, AND PODIATRY

East Meadow, NY…..Joined by Martin Payson, Chair of the Nassau Health Care Corporation (NHCC) Board of Directors, state, county officials, philanthropist Zaki Hossain and Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) staff, Arthur Gianelli, President/CEO of the NHCC, announced the opening of the Zaki Hossain Center for Hypertension, Diabetes and Vascular Disease at NUMC, advancing the care of Nassau County residents, particularly the medically underserved and uninsured who suffer from the intertwined epidemics of hypertension, diabetes and vascular disease.

"We are grateful that, through Mr. Zaki Hossain's generous gift, we will be able to provide much needed services to our many vulnerable outpatients who rely on us for detection, treatment and chronic management of these three ailments, hypertension, diabetes and vascular disease, all severely impacting our medically underserved and uninsured patient populations of Nassau County. Without the generosity of benefactors such as Mr. Hossain, we simply would not be able to build the kind of projects needed for the benefit of our patients," stated Mr. Gianelli.  "Through a combination of outreach, education and clinical care, our patients who suffer from various metabolic conditions, can avoid complications
that can result from these three conditions and can greatly benefit by complete and timely access to clinical sources and prevention care program with NUMC's Institute for Healthcare Disparities as a significant partner."

The ZHCHDVD will have clinical operations dedicated to the care of metabolic diseases with dedicated staff to ensure a patient's continuum of care, priority of conditions and routine follow-up visits without restricting their access to care. The center, built at a cost of $2.6M funded from the proceeds of the Nassau County Tobacco Securitization Program, provides eight exam rooms, several consultation and conference rooms and two waiting are lounges.

Steve Walerstein, MD, Senior VP for Medical Affairs and Medical Director for the NHCC added: "We envision the ZHCHDVD to be the hub of clinical and educational activities, to act as a partner and resources for physicians in the community and to develop interconnected activities with other relevant NUMC specialties such as ophthalmology, neurology and podiatry." At the center, specialists in nephrology, cardiology, endocrinology and vascular surgery will evaluate patients.  For the most part, these clinical encounters will serve as consultations for patients managed in the community, particularly in the Nassau Health Care Corporation's Community Health Centers. Aloysius Cuyjet, MD, Chair of the Department of Medicine and the Institute for Healthcare Disparities at NUMC stated: "It is well documented that certain population groups have increased rates of diabetes and hypertension and go undiagnosed leading to other symptomatic conditions.  Promoting diabetes and hypertension control through education and screening is the best preventive medicine that can be applied."

Kenneth Hupart, MD, Director of the Division of Endocrinology at NUMC stated:  "NUMC diabetes related health care services for the underserved communities of Nassau County, with as few as 26,000 and as many as 38,000 residents within NUMC's primary and secondary areas currently living with diabetes.  Through our Diabetes Center of Excellence,
we will improve access to health care for patients with diabetes, identify patients with diabetes earlier in the course of their disease and promote aggressive treatment and education to patients with the goal of reducing diabetes related morbidity and mortality.

Glenn Faust, MD, Chair of the Department of Surgery at NUMC added: "Screening for vascular disease is very important as this can be a silent killer leading to complications such as cardiac disease, hypertension, kidney disease or lipid disorders.  Our center uses a multidisciplinary, one stop shopping approach, with specialists using a coordinated management plan tailored to patients' individual needs."

Mr. Hossain, upon being recognized for his generosity, stated: "My family and I are honored to provide financial support for such an important initiative that will advance the care of Nassau County residents, particularly benefiting those who suffer from the intertwined epidemics of hypertension, diabetes and vascular disease."

Mr. Gianelli concluded by adding: "Philanthropic gifts such as Mr. Hossain's are vital for institutions that rely on governmental funding for capital projects. Mr. Hossain has been a benefactor and a good friend to NUMC.  We look forward to developing a long-term relationship with him to support our fundraising initiatives to better serve our patients through clinical intervention programs."
