(ANSAmed) - MADRID, AUGUST 28 -
The Catalan regional police Mossos d'Esquadra have come in for criticism after deciding to 'investigate' women wearing full-face veils or nqaabs. Catalan government spokesman Francesc Homs was quoted by the media as saying that the initiative aims to gather information to counter Islamic terrorism, but would not ''in any way'' infringe upon individual's basic rights.
The police aim to get to know the environment in which women wearing full-face veils live and to ascertain the identity of husbands or parents, in order to check for potential signs of fundamentalist ideology. According to the local government office for internal affairs at the Generalitat, the data gathering is not part of a police record or databank, and the Mossos d'Esquadra have not been given any sort of guidelines on the matter, which would violate the constitutional right to freedom of religion.
