BREAKING NEWS
Reformists reign in BNP central office

Wed, Nov 14th, 2007 12:46 pm BdST
Dhaka, Nov 14 (bdnews24.com) – BNP central office reopened at 10:20am Wednesday after a 10-month shutdown since imposition of the emergency rule with Dhaka city unit leaders Sadeque Hossain Khoka and Abdus Salam first to enter the Naya Paltan headquarters.

Acting secretary general Hafizuddin walked into the head office at 10:52am amid cheers by party adherents. Acting chief M Saifur Rahman arrived at 11:40am and was greeted by the slogan-chanting leaders and workers.

"We have come to our own office for work, not to take its possession," said Saifur to reporters, "I'm only doing my part in the absence of Khaleda Zia."

Hafiz said, "We call upon the minority dissidents to merge with us and bolster BNP solidarity."

Anticipating the reopening, hundreds of the party leaders and workers thronged the office premises since early morning, grinding traffic almost to a halt in the bustling Paltan and adjacent Motijheel.

Up to 400 police personnel and plainclothes policemen were deployed in Naya Paltan prior to the reopening of the BNP headquarters.

Salam, general secretary of BNP's metropolitan unit, told bdnews24.com that their office had remained closed for long due to misunderstanding among the party men.

Now they would use the office as before as a united political front, he added.

Where is Moeen?

We've been asking this question for a while and have a missing person report on the sidebar to express our concern. But at the same time, we hear his brother, Mr. Minhazuddin Ahmed, is actively working to set up "Jago Bangladesh", another king's party in USA and UK. (we know Mr. Minhazuddin was actively involved in asking his friends in Boston to set up the Boston meeting ).

We know Moeen was not present at the airport when President Iajuddin left for the USA, although other service chiefs were there. We also know that when Iajuddin returned, Moeen was again missing from the airport while the other service chiefs were there. If you are not convinced, here is another meeting he missed. Military Institute of Science and Technology is an engineering university run by the military. It just held it's 9th council meeting that discussed its budget for the upcoming year and set other policy directions. All in all, a pretty important meeting. But we read:
The ninth meeting of the council of Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) was held at Mirpur Cantonment in the city Thursday, report agencies.

Education Adviser Ayub Quadri chaired the meeting while Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Sarwar Jahan Nizam, Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal SM Ziaur Rahman and Lt Gen Jahangir Alam Chowdhury representing the Army Chief were present, among others, in the meeting.
Lt. Gen. Masud was in Hawaii, where a local paper misidentified him as "Bangladesh's chief of defense." Multiple stories, including an official website of the US military, makes the same mistake. We know his official title is "Principal Staff Officer." A typo? A Freudian slip? The bottom line is, he has not returned yet. But the conference ended on Nov 2--is he taking R&R at Macau as well?

We are asking because of another oblique reference in our favorite inside informer, Amader Shomoy. In prose designed to fool no one, Mr. Nasir Uddin informs us under the heading "Possible turning point after November 27":
http://www.amadershomoy.com/news.php?id=211713&sys=3 [color/emphasis ours] Despite the contorted language, it is pretty clear that the reporter means a military officer.

Lt. Gen. Masud is abroad. Is this article referring to him? Since Moeen is missing, it is entirely possible he is also abroad, and is the "non-civilian" mentioned in the article.

We don't think the latter is the case.

We were informed the night of the BNP coup that Gen. Moeen Ahmed was in CMH, and his movements were restricted. But without any corroboration, at that time we posed it as a question. His brother's active politicking also can not be reconciled with his allegedly restricted status.

But this article makes us ask the question again: where exactly is Gen. Moeen Uddin Ahmed? And while we think it was an honest mistake, why is the US military identifying Gen. Masud Uddin Chowdhury as the chief of defense?

Nov 21st is the Armed Forces Day, right? I'm thinking he'll have to appear then, if he is able. If he's not there that day too, we'll definitely know something is up.

[chottala.com] Election Commission becomes party to a political crime

In reiterating that the Election Commission made the right decision in inviting the controversially appointed secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, to its reforms dialogue with the political parties, the chief election commissioner, ATM Shamsul Huda, has surely mired himself in further controversy. There is little scope for debate that Hafiz's appointment as the secretary general and Saifur Rahman's as the acting chairman of the BNP came under dubious circumstances. That the 'standing committee meeting', which confirmed their appointments, was orchestrated by the military-driven interim government, was also evident, given media reports that many a committee members had been escorted to the meeting by members of the state's intelligence agencies. One senior member of the committee even told the media that his presence at the meeting was sought under false pretences. All of this falls in line with the current administration's agenda of political restructuring evidenced time and again by a series of actions to this effect since it took over in January this year.
Worryingly still, the Election Commission, which is supposed to be a quasi-judicial body, seems to have become complicit with the government's agenda by rubberstamping the decision of the dubious standing committee meeting. It is a travesty not only of justice but also the promise the commission made that it would make the decision on who should represent the BNP at the dialogue upon a close scrutiny of the BNP constitution, which specifies that only the chairperson can convene a meeting of the standing committee and also appoint the party's secretary general. While the commission may have been entitled to the benefit of doubt over its first mistake in choosing the Saifur-Hafiz faction as representative of the BNP mainstream, its attempt at justifying the decision certainly makes it guilty of committing a crime of political nature.
Moreover, the chief election commissioner has invoked the 'doctrine of necessity' to justify the commission's decision. The question is: Whose necessity is the commission talking about? The 'doctrine of necessity' is historically associated with authoritarian rulers who would use 'the well-being of the people' as a convenient excuse to defend typically anti-people actions. Will it then be too far-fetched to conclude that the commission may well be serving the necessity of an unelected government that is attempting to impose a pliable leadership on a political party, replacing recalcitrant leaders who did not serve such necessities?
Our concern is that the chief election commissioner may have exposed himself and the commission to a serious political controversy, raising doubts about its neutrality, which it is constitutionally ordained to maintain. The efforts by the chief election commissioner to toe the government's line will lead to a people's movement demanding his resignation or removal for the sake of credible elections to the ninth Jatiya Sangsad as and when the state of emergency is withdrawn.

[chottala.com] To naima of CBd : TOMORROW WILL BE BETTER A BETTER DAY

TOMORROW WILL BE BETTER A BETTER DAY

When you wake up in the morning
When you haven't started to think
There is a whole brand new day
Open wide and waiting for you
I know in life's sorrow,
you're on the verge of drowning
May your tears flea with yesterday
blow away with the wind

When you wake up in the morning
When you haven't started to think
The world is out there calling open
eyes to new beginning
A newborn sun is shinning
Chasing shadows from your mind
Everything will be alive,
under the sunshine's smile

Come out from your corner
No doubt in join us
You can decide the future
Devote your youthful power to this world
Come together, hand in hand together
I know you'll do
We pray and believe
that tomorrow will be better.

No, I don't know what your name is
But you're so familiar to me
Cause we belong to one family
You can hear my heart calling
Life can be music,
rainbows can be reached
If you face yourself truly
keep striving for your dream

Come out from your corner
No doubt in join us
You can decide the future
Devote your youthful power to this world
Come together, hand in hand together
I know you'll do
We pray and believe
that tomorrow will be better.

[chottala.com] Khaleda Zia threatens action against EC

Khaleda threatens action against EC

Tue, Nov 13th, 2007 8:05 pm BdST
Dhaka, Nov 13 (bdnews24.com) – Detained former prime
minister Khaleda Zia Tuesday threatened to take legal
action against the Election Commission if it did not
scrap the invitation of Hafizuddin Ahmed to dialogue.

Barrister Nowshad Zamir, lawyer for Khaleda, sent a
legal notice to the main poll office asking it to
withdraw the invitation letter in 48 hours.

The BNP chairperson expelled Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan from
the party as secretary general, a day before she was
arrested in a graft case in September.

Khaleda also installed Khandaker Delwar Hossain as new
secretary general—a decision which was conveyed to the
Election Commission by acting office secretary Rizvi
Ahmed.

The legal notice said that the letter had asked the EC
to invite Delwar to any talks on electoral reforms.

According to the legal notice, the High Court issued a
rule nisi asking the EC to explain why the BNP's
constitution would not be complied with in bringing
changes to the party and making other decisions.

The notice claimed that Khaleda was the only person to
sack or appoint secretary general to the party in line
with the constitution.

"It means Khandaker Delwar Hossain has been entrusted
to represent BNP in dialogue with the Election
Commission," the notice said.

The Election Commission invited Hafizuddin on Nov 5 to
the talks in what the notice said was a rushed move.
The EC described the move as a doctrine of necessity.

"This doctrine outlived its validity," the notice
said.

The BNP's standing committee at a meeting on Oct 29
installed former finance minister M Saifur Rahman as
acting chief of the troubled party and Hafizuddin as
acting secretary general.

The move deepened the crisis in the party as the
Delwar-led faction did not endorse the decision saying
"it was done without consent of Khaleda and in
violations of the party constitution".

arranged a Fundraising Event, the drama show "Shojon
Badiar Ghat" (The drama is based on Polli Kobi Jasim
Uddin's Poetic Novel) and walkathon on Friday,
November 16, 2007 at 8:00 PM at Harris Theatre, George

The poetic humanism Jasim Uddin unveiled in his
masterpiece 'Shojon Badiar Ghat' in the 1930s has the
same, if not more, entreat in today's world of
uprising violence often fueled by the same devious
political ambitions. The drama portrays the lives of
rural people of different religious beliefs living

and shatter peaceful lives for their own benefits. At
the core, it is a love story with Romeo-Juliet ending.

Dhroopad's presentation of Shojon Badiar Ghat includes
