আবারও বিশ্বব্যাংকের দ্বারস্থ হচ্ছে সরকার : বিশ্বব্যাংকের শর্ত পূরণ, আবুল ইজ ডাউন - অর্থমন্ত্রী

পদ্মা সেতু নির্মাণে অর্থায়নের ক্ষেত্রে আবারও বিশ্বব্যাংকের দ্বারস্থ হতে যাচ্ছে সরকার। এতদিন প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা থেকে শুরু করে মন্ত্রিপরিষদ সদস্য এবং সরকারদলীয় সংসদ সদস্যরা সংসদ ও সংসদের বাইরে বিভিন্ন অনুষ্ঠানে বিশ্বব্যাংককে দুর্নীতিগ্রস্ত প্রতিষ্ঠান, কারও কাছে ভিক্ষা নিয়ে পদ্মা সেতু নির্মাণ করব না, নিজেদের অর্থে পদ্মা সেতু করে বিশ্ববাসীকে দেখিয়ে দেয়া হবে—এমন তিক্ত বক্তব্য দিয়েছেন। এমনকি দুর্নীতির প্রমাণ দিতে না পারলে বিশ্বব্যাংকের অর্থ না নেয়ারও ঘোষণা দেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী। প্রয়োজনে উন্নয়ন প্রকল্প বন্ধ রেখে নিজস্ব অর্থায়নে পদ্মা সেতু নির্মাণের সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়া হয় কেবিনেট বৈঠকে। এজন্য সারাদেশে শুরু হয় ব্যাপক চাঁদাবাজি। কিন্তু হঠাত্ করেই আগের অবস্থান থেকে সরে এসে ইউ টার্ন নিয়ে আবারও বিশ্বব্যাংকের দ্বারস্থ হতে যাচ্ছে সরকার। এজন্য বিশ্বব্যাংকের দেয়া শর্ত পূরণ করতেই সাবেক যোগাযোগমন্ত্রী সৈয়দ আবুল হোসেনকে পদত্যাগ করতে বাধ্য করা হয়েছে। পদ্মা সেতু প্রকল্পের সঙ্গে জড়িত সরকারি কর্মকর্তা সেতু বিভাগের সাবেক সচিব মোশাররফ হোসেন ভুঁইয়াকে ছুটিতে পাঠানো হয়েছে। পদ্মা সেতুর প্রকল্প পরিচালক রফিকুল ইসলামকেও ওই পদে রাখা হয়নি। পদ্মা সেতু নির্মাণে বিশ্বব্যাংকের অর্থায়নের
সিদ্ধান্ত পুনর্বিবেচনার জন্য ক্ষেত্র তৈরি করতেই সরকার এসব সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে। পাশাপাশি জাইকার (জাপান আন্তর্জাতিক উন্নয়ন সংস্থা) প্রেসিডেন্ট আকিহিকো তানাকাকে মধ্যস্থতা করার জন্য অনুরোধ জানিয়েছে বাংলাদেশ। নির্ভরযোগ্য সূত্রে এসব তথ্য পাওয়া গেছে।
বিশ্বব্যাংকের কাছে সরকারের দ্বারস্থ হওয়ার বিষয়টি পরোক্ষভাবে স্বীকার করলেন অর্থমন্ত্রী আবুল মাল আবদুল মুহিত। গতকাল সচিবালয়ে এক বৈঠক শেষে অর্থমন্ত্রী সাংবাদিকদের বলেছেন, আবুল ইজ ডাউন। বিশ্বব্যাংকের দেয়া শর্ত পূরণেই আবুল হোসেনকে পদত্যাগ করতে হয়েছে। এর ফলে বিশ্বব্যাংক আবার পদ্মা সেতু প্রকল্পে ফিরে আসবে। তিনি বলেন, সাধারণত এ ধরনের ঘটে না। কারণ তাদের (বিশ্বব্যাংক) কাছে যথেষ্ট তথ্যপ্রমাণ ছিলও না। একজনের ডায়রিতে কিছু নাম ছিল, যা অন্যজনের কাছে প্রমাণিত সত্য হতে পারে না। অর্থমন্ত্রী বলেন, তারপরও আমরা পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছি এবং চেষ্টা করছি বিশ্বব্যাংকের সব প্রস্তাব মেনে নিতে। এ পরিস্থিতিতে ঋণ দেয়ার ব্যাপারে বিশ্বব্যাংক তাদের সিদ্ধান্ত পুনর্বিবেচনা করবে বলে আশা প্রকাশ করেন অর্থমন্ত্রী। ঋণের ব্যাপারে বিশ্বব্যাংকের কাছ থেকে সবুজ সংকেত পাওয়ার পরই কি মন্ত্রী ও সচিবকে ছুটিতে পাঠানোর পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছেন— সাংবাদিকদের এমন প্রশ্নের জবাবে মুহিত বলেন, হ্যাঁ। তাদের ছুটিতে পাঠানো হয়েছে। দু-একদিনের মধ্যেই এর গেজেট প্রকাশ করা হবে। পদ্মা সেতুর অর্থায়নের ব্যাপারে জাইকার (জাপান আন্তর্জাতিক উন্নয়ন সংস্থা) প্রেসিডেন্টের যে বিশ্বব্যাংকের সঙ্গে দেখা করার কথা ছিল, সে ব্যাপারে জানতে চাইলে অর্থমন্ত্রী বলেন, তিনি কাল (বুধবার) ওয়াশিংটনে বিশ্বব্যাংকের সঙ্গে বৈঠক করবেন।
অর্থনৈতিক সম্পর্ক বিভাগ (ইআরডি) সূত্র জানিয়েছে, বিশ্বব্যাংকের দেয়া শর্ত কার্যকরের কথা জানিয়ে দু-একদিনের মধ্যে ওয়াশিংটনে বিশ্বব্যাংকের কেন্দ্রীয় কার্যালয়ে আনুষ্ঠানিক চিঠি পাঠানোর সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে সরকার। ইতোমধ্যেই এ চিঠির খসড়া তৈরির কাজ শেষ হয়েছে। গত সোমবারই বিশ্বব্যাংকের বাংলাদেশ অফিস থেকে আবুল হোসেনের পদত্যাগের খবর জানানো হয়েছে সংস্থার কেন্দ্রীয় কার্যালয়ে। সৈয়দ আবুল হোসেনের পদত্যাগের পরদিন গতকাল ইআরডি কর্মকর্তাদের মধ্যে ব্যাপক তত্পরতা লক্ষ্য করা গেছে। শর্ত মেনে নিয়ে তা কার্যকর বিষয়ে বিশ্বব্যাংককে পাঠাতে আনুষ্ঠানিক চিঠি তৈরিতে গতকাল ব্যস্ত ছিলেন তারা। বিকালে খসড়া তৈরির কাজ শেষ হলে তা অর্থমন্ত্রীকে দেখানো হয়েছে বলে জানা গেছে।
তবে বিশ্বব্যাংকের স্থানীয় অফিস বলছে, সংস্থার দেয়া চার শর্তের মধ্যে তিনটি পালন করেছে বাংলাদেশ সরকার। পদ্মা সেতুর দুর্নীতির অনুসন্ধান ও তদন্তে বিশ্বব্যাংকের তত্ত্বাবধানে একটি বাইরের প্যানেলের কাছে তথ্য দেয়া ও প্যানেলকে তদন্ত প্রক্রিয়ার পর্যাপ্ত মূল্যায়নের সুযোগ দেয়ার শর্ত আরোপ করা হয়েছিল। এ শর্তটি এখনও পালন করা হয়নি। এ শর্ত পূরণ না করে পদ্মা সেতুতে বিশ্বব্যাংকের ঋণ পাওয়া যাবে কি না, বলতে পারছেন না বাংলাদেশ অফিসের কর্মকর্তারা। সিদ্ধান্ত জানতে সংস্থার ওয়াশিংটন অফিসের মতামতের অপেক্ষা করতে হবে বলে জানিয়েছে ঢাকা অফিস। সৈয়দ আবুল হোসেনের পদত্যাগের মাধ্যমেই পদ্মা সেতু প্রকল্পে বিশ্বব্যাংকের অর্থায়নের জটিলতা কেটে যায়নি বলে মনে করছেন কর্মকর্তারা। এ বিষয়ে প্রতিক্রিয়া জানতে চাইলে বিশ্বব্যাংকের ঢাকা অফিসের একজন কর্মকর্তা বলেন, এ বিষয়ে বিশ্বব্যাংকের প্রধান কার্যালয় থেকে এখনও কোনো প্রতিক্রিয়া পাওয়া যায়নি। তিনি আরও বলেন, বিশ্বব্যাংকের চারটি শর্তের মধ্যে আরও একটি শর্ত পূরণ বাকি রয়েছে। তা হচ্ছে, বিশ্বব্যাংকের তত্ত্বাবধানে একটি বাইরের প্যানেলের কাছে তথ্য দেয়া ও প্যানেলকে তদন্ত প্রক্রিয়ার পর্যাপ্ততা মূল্যায়নের সুযোগ দেয়া। এটি এখনও পূরণ করা হয়নি।
প্রসঙ্গত, পদ্মা সেতুর পরামর্শক নিয়োগের ক্ষেত্রে দুর্নীতি হয়েছে—এমন অভিযোগ করে বাংলাদেশ সরকারের কাছে বিশ্বাসযোগ্য তথ্য-উপাত্ত ও প্রমাণ দিয়েছিল বিশ্বব্যাংক। প্রথম দফায় বাংলাদেশ সরকারকে দুর্নীতির বিরুদ্ধে ব্যবস্থা নেয়ার সুপারিশ করেছিল। পরে অর্থায়ন পেতে বিশ্বব্যাংক চারটি শর্ত দেয়। শর্তগুলো হচ্ছে—প্রথমত, যেসব সরকারি কর্মকর্তার বিরুদ্ধে দুর্নীতির অভিযোগ রয়েছে, তদন্ত শেষ না হওয়া পর্যন্ত তাদের দায়িত্ব থেকে অন্তত ছুটি দেয়া। দ্বিতীয়ত, এ অভিযোগ তদন্তের জন্য দুদকে একটি বিশেষ তদন্ত দল নিয়োগ করা। তৃতীয়ত, আন্তর্জাতিক বিশেষজ্ঞদের সমন্বয়ে গঠিত বিশ্বব্যাংকের তদন্ত প্যানেলকে অভিযোগটি বস্তুনিষ্ঠ তদন্তের ব্যাপারে বাংলাদেশ সরকারের সার্বিক সহায়তা প্রদান। চতুর্থত, বাংলাদেশ সরকারের আইন ও বিধি অনুযায়ী তদন্তে দোষী প্রমাণিতদের বিরুদ্ধে ব্যবস্থা নেয়া। সরকার এসব শর্ত না মানায় গত ২৯ জুন অর্থায়নের চুক্তি বাতিল করে বিশ্বব্যাংক। পরে এডিবিও ঋণ চুক্তি বাতিলের ঘোষণা দেয়। এতে অনিশ্চিত হয়ে পড়ে পদ্মা সেতু নির্মাণ।
যে কারণে বিশ্বব্যাংকের দ্বারস্থ সরকার : পদ্মা সেতু নির্মাণে ২৯০ কোটি ডলার ব্যয় ধরা হয়েছিল। বিশ্বব্যাংক, এডিবি (এশীয় উন্নয়ন ব্যাংক), জাইকা (জাপান ইন্টারন্যাশনাল কো-অপারেশন এজেন্সি), আইডিবি (ইসলামী উন্নয়ন ব্যাংক) ও বাংলাদেশ সরকারের অর্থায়নে এ সেতু নির্মাণের কথা। সেতুর জন্য মোট খরচের মধ্যে ১ হাজার ২০০ মিলিয়ন মার্কিন ডলার দেয়ার কথা বিশ্বব্যাংকের। এ বিষয়ে বিশ্বব্যাংকের সঙ্গে বাংলাদেশ সরকারের চুক্তি হয় গত বছরের ২৮ এপ্রিল। ৬১৫ মিলিয়ন মার্কিন ডলার দেয়ার শর্তে এডিবির সঙ্গে চুক্তি হয় গত বছরের ৬ জুন, ৪১৫ মিলিয়ন মার্কিন ডলার দেয়ার শর্তে জাইকার সঙ্গে চুক্তি হয় গত বছরের ১৮ এপ্রিল এবং ১৪০ মিলিয়ন মার্কিন ডলার দেয়ার শর্তে আইডিবির সঙ্গে চুক্তি হয় গত বছরের ২৪ মে। সেতু প্রকল্পে এ চারটি দাতা সংস্থা ছাড়া বাংলাদেশ সরকারের দেয়ার কথা ৬১৭ দশমিক ৬ মিলিয়ন মার্কিন ডলার—যা বাংলাদেশী মুদ্রায় ৪ হাজার ২৯৭ কোটি ৬৭ লাখ টাকা ধরা হয়েছিল। কিন্তু পদ্মা সেতুর মূল স্থাপনার কাজ শুরুর আগেই শুরু হয় দুর্নীতি। বিশ্বব্যাংক দুর্নীতি বিষয়ে তথ্য দেয়ার পরও সরকার ব্যবস্থা না নেয়ার প্রেক্ষিতে গত ২৯ জুন চুক্তি বাতিল করে বিশ্বব্যাংক। এরই ধারাবাহিকতায় চুক্তি বাতিল করে এডিবি। অন্যান্য দাতা সংস্থাও চুক্তি বাতিলের প্রক্রিয়া শুরু করে। এ অবস্থায় নিজস্ব অর্থায়নে পদ্মা সেতু নির্মাণের ঘোষণা দেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা। সে লক্ষ্যে সব উন্নয়ন প্রকল্প বন্ধ রেখে পদ্মা সেতু প্রকল্পে টাকা বরাদ্দ দেয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়া হয়। এ সেতুর নামে সারাদেশে ব্যাপক চাঁদাবাজি শুরু হয়। রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে তোলা চাঁদা ভাগাভাগি নিয়ে ছাত্রলীগের এক নেতার মৃত্যু হয়। দেশের অর্থনীতিবিদসহ বিশেষজ্ঞরা সরকারের এ সিদ্ধান্ত হঠকারী আখ্যায়িত করে বলেন, এতে দেশের মানুষের দুর্ভোগ আরও বাড়বে। তাদের মতে, এত বড় প্রকল্পে আন্তর্জাতিক সংস্থাগুলোর সহযোগিতা ছাড়া করলে দেশের অর্থনীতিতে ধস নামার আশঙ্কা রযেছে। অবস্থার অবনতির আশঙ্কায় সরকার বিশ্বব্যাংকের দ্বারস্থ হতে বাধ্য হয়।
বিশ্বব্যাংককে রাজি করাতে সরকারের নানামুখী চেষ্টা : পদ্মা সেতুতে অর্থায়নের ব্যাপারে বিশ্বব্যাংককে রাজি করানোর জন্য নানামুখী চেষ্টা চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে সরকার। এ বিষয়ে তদবির করার জন্য বিনিয়োগ বোর্ডের নির্বাহী চেয়ারম্যান ড. এস এ সামাদ সম্প্রতি ওয়াশিংটন সফরে যান। কিন্তু তিনি বিশ্বব্যাংকের প্রেসিডেন্টের সঙ্গে সাক্ষাত্ করতে ব্যর্থ হন। এসময় এডিবি, আইডিবি ও জাইকাসহ অন্যান্য সংস্থাকেও বিশ্বব্যাংককে রাজি করাতে অনুরোধ জানায় সরকার। এদিকে পদ্মা সেতুতে অর্থায়ন বিষয়ে অপর দাতা সংস্থা এশীয় উন্নয়ন ব্যাংকের (এডিবি) আবাসিক প্রতিনিধি তেরেসা খো বৈঠক করেছেন অর্থনৈতিক সম্পর্ক বিভাগের (ইআরডি) সিনিয়র সচিব ইকবাল মাহমুদের সঙ্গে। গতকাল বিকালে শেরেবাংলা নগরের ইআরডি কার্যালয়ে এ বৈঠক অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। সেখানে কী সিদ্ধান্ত হয়েছে, তা নিশ্চিতভাবে জানা যায়নি। তবে নির্ভরযোগ্য একটি সূত্র জানায়, আবুল হোসেনকে মন্ত্রিপরিষদ থেকে বাদ দেয়ার সিদ্ধান্তকে এডিবি স্বাগত জানিয়েছে। পাশাপাশি তাদের অর্থায়ন অব্যাহত রাখার বিষয়ে মৌখিকভাবে আশ্বাসও দেয়া হয়েছে। চূড়ান্ত সিদ্ধান্ত তাদের কেন্দ্রীয় অফিস থেকে জানানো হবে বলে জানা গেছে।

By the way you cannot make some one like you if they do not fell same towards you..I guess I won't loose sleep over what West Bengal does or does not..

Has the new Bengali President  Pranab Mukherjee or the Chief Minister of west Bengal Mamata Banerjee paid their respects and condolences to the family of Humayun Ahmed? Has any Bengali dignitary from West Bengal come to visit Bangladesh to show their solidarity with the people of Bangladesh at this loss?

When Rajesh Khanna died all TV channels and newspapers in Bangladesh covered the death as if he was a star of this country. Has there been a similar outpouring of grief in India or west Bengal for Humayun Ahmed? 

I think this is because of the superiority complex and arrogance of Indian/West Bengalis who will never give recognition to anyone from Bangladesh so why do we pander to them?

হুমায়ূন আহমেদকে বাংলা কথাসাহিত্যে শরৎচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের ওপরেই স্থান দিয়েছেন কথাসাহিত্যিক সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়। বিবিসি বাংলায় তিনি বলেছেন, বাংলা ভাষায় শরৎচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের এক সময় অনেক জনপ্রিয়তা ছিল। কিন্তু হুমায়ূন তাকেও ছাড়িয়ে গেছে।

বাংলাদেশের প্রখ্যাত সাহিত্যিক হুমায়ূন আহমেদের মৃত্যুতে আজ মঙ্গলবার কলকাতায় এক শোকসভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। শোকসভায় প্রখ্যাত সাহিত্যিক সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় বলেছেন, 'আমি এখনো ভাবতে পারছি না বন্ধু হুমায়ূন আহমেদ নেই। এখনো ও বেঁচে আছে আমার মনজুড়ে। শুধু আমি নই, পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মানুষের মাঝেও হুমায়ূন বেঁচে থাকবে।' তিনি আরও বলেন, 'হুমায়ূনের জনপ্রিয়তা তো শরত্চন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়কেও ছাড়িয়ে গেছে। আমার তো মনে হয়, শরত্চন্দ্রের কয়েক গুণ বেশি চলেছে হুমায়ূনের উপন্যাস। সত্যি কথা কী, আমি চাইনি প্রাণহীন হুমায়ূনকে দেখতে। চেয়েছি আমার হূদয়ে যেভাবে হুমায়ূন এত দিন ছিল, এখনো সেভাবেই থাকবে।' 
সুনীল বলেন, 'হুমায়ূনদের মৃত্যু নেই। ওরা বেঁচে থাকে মানুষের হূদয়ে। দুই বাংলার মানুষের মাঝে।' 
শোকসভায় সাহিত্যিক শংকর (মনিশংকর মুখোপাধ্যায়) বলেছেন, বাংলার এক হাজার বছরের ইতিহাসে সবচেয়ে জনপ্রিয় সাহিত্যিক হলেন হুমায়ূন আহমেদ। সাহিত্য সৃষ্টিতে তাঁর জাদু গোটা উপমহাদেশে নতুন দিকনির্দেশনা দিয়েছে। আর আজ তাই তাঁর সাহিত্যকর্ম নিয়ে গবেষণার সময় এসেছে। 
বিকেলে কলকাতার বাংলাদেশ উপ-হাইকমিশনের উদ্যোগে আয়োজন করা হয় ওই শোকসভার। আলোচনায় আরও অংশ নেন শীর্ষেন্দু মুখোপাধ্যায়। সভাপতিত্ব করেন কলকাতায় নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের উপ-হাইকমিশনার আবিদা ইসলাম। 
সাহিত্যিক শীর্ষেন্দু মুখোপাধ্যায় বলেন, হুমায়ূন আহমেদের বুদ্ধিদীপ্ত গদ্য এবং রোমাঞ্চকর গল্প লেখায় ছিল অদ্ভুত রকমের জাদু। তিনি বলেন, হুমায়ূন আহমেদ বেঁচে থাকলে বাংলা সাহিত্য আরও সমৃদ্ধ হতো। দুই বাংলার সাহিত্যে হুমায়ূন আহমেদ দিয়েছেন নতুন দিকনির্দেশনা। তাঁকে হারিয়ে বাংলা সাহিত্য প্রতিভাবান এক লেখককে হারাল।

Mollah, his men killed poet, family

Prosecution witness tells war crimes tribunal

Another prosecution witness told the International Crimes Tribunal-2 that Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah and his accomplices had killed pro-liberation poet Meherun Nesa, her mother and two brothers at their home in Mirpur during the war.

Fourth prosecution witness poet Quazi Rosy, who was a close friend and a neighbour of Meherun Nesa, said even though Meherun appealed for life embracing the holy Quran, they slit the throat of all of them.

The 63-year-old witness said she had heard about the brutal killings from people on March 27, 1971, evening, the day of incident, and after the Liberation War she heard it from two non-Bangalee Biharies of Mirpur.

On July 10, Syed Shahidul Haque Mama, a freedom fighter and the second prosecution witness in the crimes against humanity case, also said Quader Mollah and his accomplices had killed Meherun Nesa and her family members during the Liberation War.

On May 28, the tribunal indicted the Jamaat assistant secretary general on six charges of crimes against humanity, including murders and mass killings.

Yesterday, the three-member tribunal, led by its Chairman Justice ATM Fazle Kabir with members Justice Obaidul Hassan and Judge Md Shahinur Islam, also recorded the cross-examination of Rosy before it adjourned the case proceedings until tomorrow.

During her 50-minute testimony yesterday, Rosy said Meherun accompanied her most of the time of the pre-liberation period. "We had formed an action committee to resist oppression against Bangalees in Mirpur [before the war]. I was the president and Meherun and many others were members of the action committee," said Rosy.

After Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's March-7 speech in 1971, which was a call for liberation, enmity between Bangalees and non-Bengalees intensified, said the witness, adding, "Under the circumstances, we continued to hold meetings regularly."

"On the morning of March 25, 1971, we had a meeting and apprehended that something was going to happen," said Rosy.

"When, I reached home after the meeting, I got information that my home was going to be raided along with Meherun's home," Rosy said, adding, "Because, we were the female members of the action committee."

Rosy said she had sent a message to Meherun asking her to leave home but Meherun sent her brother to Rosy with the message, "Where would they [Meherun Nesa, her mother and two brothers] go?"

"Afterwards, I left Mirpur but Meherun did not leave Mirpur and on the evening of March 27, I got information that Quader Mollah and his accomplices wearing red and white bandanas entered Meherun's house around 11:00am," said Rosy.

"Seeing them, Meherun embraced a holy Quran firmly and pleaded for life but they slit the throat of all four of them [Meherun Nesa, her mother and two brothers]," added emotion-chocked Rosy.

"She was my friend but I could not do anything for her," lamented Rosy.

"They entered the house under the leadership of Quader Mollah on that day I could not say weather Quader Mollah had entered the house or not," said the witness.

Rosy said after the Liberation War, non-Bangalee Gulzar and another Bihari also told her about the incident.

"After killing Meherun, they tied her severed head to the ceiling fan with her hair and her beheaded body wriggled like a slaughtered chicken," said Rosy, quoting the non-Bangalee Biharies.

Rosy said Quader Mollah was the leader of Islami Chhatra Sangha at that time and under his leadership, local non-Bangalees had taken part in the election campaign for Ghulam Azam, the then ameer of East Pakistan Jamaat-e-Islami and a candidate of Mirpur area. Ghulam Azam is currently an accused at the International Crimes Tribunal-1.

At the end of her testimony, Rosy, quoting a poem of Mahbubul Alam Chowdhury, the writer of the first poem on 'Ekushey', said, "Kandte ashini, phashir dabi niye eshechhi [haven't come here to cry, but to demand death by hanging]. I want trial of war criminals. I have lived this long to say something at this holy place [the court]."

"I have been suffering from cancer for the last 19 years. If I die after leaving this room [tribunal], then I have an appeal to you [tribunal], try the war criminals," said emotion-chocked Rosy.

Ekramul Huqe, defence counsel of Quader Mollah, cross-examined the witness for 20 minutes and asked around 20 questions mostly on her educational background. Following his time plea, the tribunal adjourned the proceeding until tomorrow when the defence would continue cross-examining Rosy.
