[chottala.com] Renaming Bangladesh

 Renaming Bangladesh
Abid Bahar
As if lovers renew their affection for each other daily with the use of baby talks like "Honey, Mushy-mushy, muffin" etc. so is the case of poets, artists, intellectuals and politicians serving their nation create in their works a sense of love and affection for their country through crafting illusion. In the end their love imitated by people turns into patriotism and their work help create a spirit of regeneration; of belongingness and in the end help people to avoid national amnesia.
It is true, despite many missteps by the successive Bangladesh governments; their records show that they made many small steps forward, which led Bangladesh to its slow pace of industrial development. Accompanying those changes however, life in Bangladesh is increasingly becoming mechanical. We may question what could be done to bring a sense of regeneration in Bangladesh. After all Bangladesh is a land of rivers that for centuries it's beauty poets admired so much. Bangladeshi people and governments can begin to make their mark by renaming Bangladesh place names.
It is not true that no steps were taken in this direction. We know Ershad took the first initiative. He changed the name of the capital from Dacca to Dhaka which was a total blunder and it shows Ershad's mind not in the present Bangladesh but in the colonial Bengal where the trend was to fix Bengali name in line with English. Whereas in India we see the opposite, Calcatta was renamed into Kolkata. There also has been a common trend to name places after our great leader Bangabandu or Ziaur Rahman, which is ok, but lately it is taking an unpleasant course of confrontation; causing the rise of partisan politics in Bangladesh. This exaggerated and mean-spirited approach dehumanizes them and goes entirely against the spirit of love for the country and its history. I believe that if we love our country, we should put an end to this trend.
In Singapore, places are named after great educationists, scientists and artists. How about naming Bangladesh with an eye to its history, to its intellectualist and its natural beauty? Not long ago India did it for its provinces with some help from poets like Rabi Tagore who devised names like Meghalay etc.. In the West they do it regularly and in Canada there are groups called Canadian Society for the Study of Names in which the present author is also a member. All these are to create illusion and the growth in consciousness and to appreciate its riches to develop patriotism. This is also one of the ways to see our dear motherland changing everyday but into its more beautiful metamorphosis.
Not long ago, India renamed Bombay in to Momboi, why not our beautiful Cox's Bazar originally was named after an English captain we now name it to Shopnopuri (dreamland), which is also the world's longest beach, but the Internet search shows some Indian websites calls it a terrorist spot, which I personally disagree.
Following the same spirit mentioned above, how about we call Banderbon which is about Monkeys as the Sabujbon.and Feni in Noakhali as it is an incomprehensible name as the Purborag; part of which extends into India. And Chagalnaya in Feni, originally was Shagornaiya to rename it back again as Shagornaiya. In Chittagong, how about Hathazari to name it as Bishoborenou Yonuspur after the famed Dr. Yonus. He did his first experiment in Hathazari. This is naming the place after the name of an intellectual.
Historically speaking, Chittagong for sometime was under the occupation of the Arakanese kingdom; in our time we still hear xenophobic Arakanese Burmese leaders talking about their claim that Chittagong belings to them. It is about time that we rename places in Chittagong. Ramu in Chittagong, was originally an Arakanese name but Shah Suja, the then govornor of Bengal before his ill-fated journey to Arakan stayed in Ramu and journeyed to Arakan. In Arakan he was brutally murdered with his entire family. Suja's uncle Shaista Khan to revenge the massacre fought against the Arakanese and recaptured Chittagong in a battle in Fote gao, now called (corrupt) Potenga.. He finally annexed it with Bengal. How about we rename Ramu as Suja Nagar and Teknaf the last point of Bangladesh as the Shainta Nagar?
Thekher Pahar in Chittagong Hill Tracts is the last point of Bangladesh. How about we name it as the Bhasani Pahar; Maulana Bhasani the selfless leader who lived like a Bengali peasant, fought against the British, against Pakistan and Indian aggression, being one of the tallest images to fight for independence. How about we name it after him, and another tallest of the spots the Chimbuker Pahar as the Sheikh Mujib Pahar? How about we rename Mogh bazaar in Dhaka, the place where the Mogh pirates committed so many of their crimes into Zia bazaar?
Finally, Chotogram, a name known to be given by the Arakanese, Queen Elizabeth once in her visit during the 60's called Chittagong as the queen of the East and now how about we rename it as Chattola?
One last thing to say about renaming place names in Bangladesh that in this exercise we should never bring the issue of politics but of only the issues that binds us
together, the love of our country we call SONAR BANGLADESH and its beauty.

[chottala.com] 'BNP arranged Musharraf-Chetia meet in Dhaka'

Photo: Firoz Ahmed

Dhaka, Jan 08 (bdnews24.com)–Former Pakistan president General Pervez Musharraf had a meeting with India's separatist ULFA leader Anup Chetia in Dhaka during the BNP-led alliance government's rule.

This was disclosed by Awami League general secretary and LGRD minister Syed Ashraful Islam at a roundtable on 'prime minister Sheikh Hasina's forthcoming India visit: Bangladesh-India bilateral relation' in the city on Friday.

"Pervez Mosharraf had a one and a half hours meeting with detained UFLA leader Anup Chetia at his hotel room during a visit when BNP and [Jamaat-e-Islami] were in power," he told the roundtable held at the National Press Club.

The AL leader termed Hasina's forthcoming visit to India as important, saying it will be a political trip and that she will not have any set agenda.

"The visit will be a complete success. This will see revival of Bangladesh-India relations that are built on trust and confidence," he hoped.

Blaming BNP and its allies for worsening of relations with India, Ashraf said the 10-truckload of weapons and 30 million bullets seized in Bangladesh were actually meant for use against India.

"How can one expect good relation with India after all these had happened?" he asked.

[chottala.com] Article, MUJIB'S LOST PAGE ( This is a better copy then previously sent) [1 Attachment]

<*>[Attachment(s) from abid bahar included below]

MUJIB'S LOST PAGE
Abid Bahar
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman the great leader of Bangladesh was never a studious person. He preferred to hear things about history from the wiseman around him. However, to avoid hearing different people saying different things, immediately after the independence, he asked a known historian to write the Bangladesh history in two pages. As instructed the historian began with his thesis saying: "Bangladesh is defined by India and Pakistan." Bangabandhu couldn't understand the meaning. He asked Moni Singh the wiseman around him to explain the sentence. Interestingly, the article gave the example of Bhasani who it said in 1947 fought against joining with India and refused to stay with Pakistan in 1971. The author identified Bhasani as an example of an independent minded Bangladeshi. Moni Singh being a pro-Indian and anti Pakistani politician, finding Bhasani's name on it and negative things about Indian hegemony and the Farakka dam, quickly hid
the page under the sofa. Moni Singh began explaining to Mujib the atrocities committed by the Pakistanis while Mujib was in Pakistan. During the session, Mujib once in a while lost his concentration by noticing only one page in Moni Singh's hand because he knew there was another page and interrupted him to ask about the other page. Moni Singh said in reply, "No, I only found one page."
Mujib began to read the only one page whenever he had time to read. He began to read it as if like a page from the Holy book, the page saying we are defined by Pakistan. But he always knew that there was another page that was there. Every morning he read the only page and looked for the other page.
Moni Singh once in a while visited Mujib to check his devotion to the page. In the absence of the lost page, Mujib began propagating only against Pakistan to define Bangladesh. One day Ziaur Rahman paid a visit to Mujib's house and found a full page hiding under the sofa; which says Bangladesh is defined by India. He read the material and left it where he found. Mujib found it the day before his assassination and called Bhasani to explain how Bangladesh is defined by India. Bhasani said, "We are an independent country with our history evolved from being part of Bengal. Then West Bengal led by its Hindu majority joined with India and Muslim Bengal joined with Pakistan. Mujib said in reply, "Yes, that is why lately when I finish my speech with joy Bangla, my people don't applaud." At the Dhaka university campus speech next day, he decided to say "Hoda Hafez" for "Joy Bangla." But it was too late.
What were the materials written on pages of history? Like it or not, it was about the soul-searching of Bangladesh people about the important elements of their history. The author of the article began to explain why in 1947 East Bengal didn't join with India and why East Bengal also refused to stay with Pakistan in 1971; the reason behind it were the two important identities of Bangladesh (1) The liberal Sufi religious identity of the majority people(2) Its language Bangla identity of the majority people. The equation of the two makes Bangladesh as a country of majority Muslim Bengali people. This identity makes them different from both India and Pakistan. We were known as the East Bengalis or Mujib just called it "Bengalis."
In the independent Bangladesh during Mujib's time tribals complained that they could be Bangladeshis but not the Bengalis. Zia to include the tribals and Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist renamed the previous ethnic Bengali identity (Bengali) to its evolved new territorial identity and he called them the Bangladeshis.
True, when the soul searching is done we are reminded that we are different from the Indians that put fence to divide the Bengal, built dams to control the rivers entering Bangladesh. In the pre partition time, Hindu zamindari oppression against Muslim peasants led to the rebels like Titumir Shariatullah and the others responsible for East Bengal to join with Pakistan and conversely we are defined by Pakistan that reminds us the genocide committed by the Pakistani military rulers. Thus, Bangladeshi's identity is as if like the two sides of the same coin: its religious identity and its linguistic identity.
In the mean time, like Mujib, Moni Singh also died and the story of the lost page was never raised to Hasina. Lately Hasina following the Indian pattern wanted to remove Bangladesh's religious identity and to turn Bangladesh into a secular state (Dharmohinota) Professor Talukdar Moniruzan pointed out that such measures would cause the loss of Bangladesh's religious values of tolerance needed in a democratic system. True, Bangladesh is known to treasure the great tradition on Sufi Islamic values of tolerance and liberalism. Hasina only fearing the backlash figured it to be unwise to hurt the sentiment of the people so she left it alone. Hasina only fearing the backlash figured it to be unwise to hurt the sentiment of the people so she left it alone but never bothered to find her father's lost page of history. She however goes to haj and struck by the time warp Hasina and her son Shajib Wajed is increasingly showing intolerance to Islamic values and chasing the proverbial wild goose of Pakistani hanadar bahini that is only in history while at present Hasina is
allowing Indian Highway into Bangladesh and giving concessions of Bangladesh's sovergnity to India discounting the lessons in Mujib's lost page.
