Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain lambasted Commerce Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman yesterday calling him a 'mini Kissinger' for 'dialoguing with corrupt politicians'.

"Like a mini Kissinger, the commerce adviser is now very busy meeting and dialoguing with political leaders, even corrupt politicians. He is now commercialising the constitution leaving his commerce ministry duties," renowned jurist Dr Kamal said during a news briefing following a meeting of his party's standing committee.

He also labelled Law Adviser AF Hassan Ariff as 'an associate of the mini Kissinger', and urged the law adviser not to run with the commerce adviser to politicians for 'secret meetings'.

"It is not their duty. Why Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed and four other advisers are continuing to have dialogues with corrupt politicians?" he questioned while addressing the media in his residence in the capital.

The Gono Forum chief demanded a judicial committee for investigating the incident of granting bail to 206 detainees including many political leaders in 100 minutes.

"The law adviser should investigate the issue of granting bail to 206 persons in a day. It's not possible through legal procedures. An investigation should be launched in the interest of the people and the judiciary," Dr Kamal said.

He also urged the caretaker government not to defer the election 'being threatened by some corrupt politicians' who are saying their parties will not participate in the election unless their top leaders' release from detention are made permanent.

"A congenial atmosphere for the next election and unconditional release of corrupt politicians can't go hand in hand. We don't want an election ignoring our constitution," he quipped.

The caretaker government should not be cowered by the threats of political parties, Dr Kamal added.

He urged the government to make public the details of corruption cases against politicians, so the people may know about them.

He also said 14-party alliance was formed on the basis of a 23-point charter. "No partner can violate the 23-point charter. If any partner doesn't believe in the charter or violates it, that party will be ejected from the alliance," he said.

Referring to an interview of BNP Standing Committee Member Tanbir Ahmed Siddiky with The Daily Star published yesterday, Dr Kamal said, "I support Tanbir's proposal for publishing white papers on Hawa Bhaban."

He also raised questions about Ershad getting bail in four cases, and said, "Scrapping of four cases against Ershad was not in line with the constitution."

About Ershad's Jatiya Party being an ally of 14-party in the grand electoral alliance, Dr Kamal said, "14-party shouldn't have alliance with any party that doesn't subscribe to the 23-point charter. A controversial political party shouldn't be allowed to have an alliance with 14-party just to win some seats in the election."

Gono Forum Presidium Member Pankaj Bhattacharya and its Acting General Secretary Advocate Subrata Chowdhury were also present.

[chottala.com] Publish white paper on Hawa Bhaban - Tanbir challenges govt

Talking polls, beyond
Tanbir challenges govt

BNP Standing Committee Member Chowdhury Tanbir Ahmed Siddiky has said his party will not take action against any party man for corruption if he/she is not found corrupt in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

"We cannot term any one corrupt even if a lower court convicts him/her. But he/she will lose party membership if the Supreme Court confirms the conviction," Tanbir said in an exclusive interview with The Daily Star.

Demanding publication of a white paper regarding alleged corruption by Hawa Bhaban (BNP chief's previous political office), he said any allegation must be supported by

proofs and documents, otherwise it cannot be accepted.

About bringing changes in BNP party constitution, he said there is scope for improvement. One can place proposals for this at party council but until it (council) makes any change, all provisions of the existing constitution will remain in force.

Replying to a question, he said his party has already started preparations to take part in the coming parliamentary polls since there is no alternative to election to save the people from the existing 'suffocating' situation.

The BNP leader alleged that Awami League (AL) wants to see a national election without BNP's participation as in the recent elections to city corporations and municipalities. "They [AL] want to form a government through a walkover in the election as they know their grand alliance will not win if the BNP-led four-party combine takes part in it."

There is a plan to keep BNP away from the polls process, he said. "BNP is an election-oriented party, it will not accept any stage-managed election."

Tanbir said a level playing field for all political parties and an environment free from all fears are the main requirements for holding a transparent and credible election, but that cannot be ensured under the state of emergency.

The caretaker government's stance on emergency shows its lack of confidence in the people as well as political parties, he added.

Earlier, the government had said the state of emergency would continue until the election to ensure security of the voters.

It is the responsibility of the government and Election Commission to withdraw (state of) emergency and make necessary amendments to the revised Representation of the People Order (RPO) if they really want hold a meaningful election, the BNP leader observed.

[chottala.com] what our editors say?

Washington post has endorsed Barak Obama as their choice  in the position of president of USA.

Our electon is also coming. Should not our editors openly endorse this or that party or allience ?

Becuase  to the readers , each and every  paper is known as pro-AL or proBNP.

So why they should  remain in the veil of neutrality that actually does not cover them.
