[chottala.com] Canada to deport Bangabandhu killer Noor Chy - Daily Star report

Canada to deport Bangabandhu killer Noor Chy: Minister

Bangabandhu Killer Noor Chowdhury
Star Online Report

The Canadian government has decided to deport Noor Chowdhury, fugitive killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, to Bangladesh.

Law Minister Shafique Ahmed said on Sunday afternoon at his Secretariat office.

He said the Canadian authorities have seized the passport of Noor Chowdhury since he has been illegally staying in Canada.

The law minister said the Canadian government seized the passport of Noor Chowdhury, a convict of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman murder case, in July last year and have submitted it to the Bangladesh High Commission in Canada.

Noor Chowdhury has to report to the local police station every week, he added.

The law minister said he had a discussion with his Canadian counterparts about bringing Noor Chowdhury back to Bangladesh.

He said Noor Chowdhury earlier appealed to the Canadian government to permit him to stay in that country as a refugee but the government has rejected his appeal.

Now he is trying to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada for allowing him to remain in the country, the minister informed.

Shafique Ahmed also said the Bangladesh government is trying to bring the fugitive convicts of Bangabandhu murder case back to the country.

This development came days after the Appellate Division of Supreme Court upheld the death penalties of 12 convicted ex-army officers for the August 15,1975, assassination of Bangabandhu along with most of his family members.

[chottala.com] Chavez: Israel aims to exterminate Palestinians

Chavez: Israel aims to exterminate Palestinians

Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas (L) and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says that Israel is aiming to 'exterminate the Palestinian nation' and that he backs the establishment of East Jerusalem Al-Quds as capital of an independent Palestinian state.

"We are on the side of the Palestinian people's memorable struggle against the genocidal state of Israel that knocks down, kills and aims to terminate the Palestinian people," Chavez told acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas in Caracas on Friday night.

"We reiterate our greatest commitment and our greatest solidarity for the creation of an independent Palestinian state with the holy city of Jerusalem Al-Quds as its capital," he added.

During the meeting Mahmoud Abbas dismissed an Israeli plan to temporarily halt construction of new West Bank settlements as insufficient, saying Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chose occupation rather than peace.

"Wednesday's announcement by Netanyahu of a 10-month halt to new construction in the West Bank Jewish settlements didn't bring anything new because the occupation is going to continue in the West Bank and in Jerusalem Al-Quds," Abbas said.

The acting Palestinian Authority Chief added, "We don't have any condition to restarting negotiations except the commitment of the two sides to the foundations of the peace operation according to the road map, and especially stopping the expansionist activities of the Israelis."

Abbas earlier visited Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay to build support for efforts toward a Palestinian state.

Latin American leaders backed his calls for Israel to halt settlement construction and also to guarantee that future borders are based on 1967 lines.

Under the 2002 Roadmap for Peace plan brokered by the United States, the European Union, the United Nations, and Russia, Israel has to 'dismantle settlement outposts erected since 2001 and also freeze all settlement activities'.

There are currently 121 Israeli settlements and approximately 102 Israeli outposts built illegally on Palestinian land occupied by Israel in 1967. All of these settlements and outposts are illegal under international law and have been condemned by numerous United Nations Security Council resolutions.

These settlements and outposts are inhabited by a population of some 462,000 Israeli settlers. Some 191,000 Israelis are living in settlements around Jerusalem Al-Quds and a further 271,400 are further spread throughout the West Bank.

[chottala.com] Canada to deport Noor Chowdhury, Sheikh Mujib's fugitive killer: Minister

Canada to deport Sheikh Mujib's fugitive killer: Minister
Updated on Sunday, November 29, 2009, 23:21 IST

Dhaka: A fugitive killer of Bangladesh's founding leader Sheikh Mujib is to be deported after Canada rejected his plea for asylum, amid stepped up efforts by the Awami League government to bring to justice the absconders in the assassination, the Law Minister said on Sunday.

Shafique Ahmed said Canada has ordered the deportation of ex-Major Noor Chowdhury, rejecting his asylum prayers.

"Canada has rejected the prayer of condemned convict Noor Chowdhury seeking asylum in that country," Ahmed said.

The development comes days after Bangladesh's Supreme Court upheld the death sentence on 12 of the killers of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman after final appeal hearing.

The Interpol has already issued "red alert" to nab the fugitives linked to the assassination of Sheikh Mujib who are believed to be living abroad.

Former military officer Chowdhury, according to the murder trial proceedings, shot Sheikh Mujib dead along with ex-Maj Bazlul Huda.

Ahmed, however, said Chowdhury still had an option to stay back, seeking a court intervention.

Chowdhury would be third wanted convict in the case to be deported. In 1998 Huda was returned home from Thai jail after Dhaka and Bangkok signed an extradition treaty, while the US deported another convict of the case ex-Lt Col. AKM Mohiuddin in 2007.

Sheikh Mujib, popularly called Bangabandhu, who led Bangladesh to independence in 1971, was gunned down at his home in a posh Dhanmandi area, along with his wife and three sons in a coup on August 15, 1975.

Earlier, Home Minister Sahara Khatun said the government has started the process to bring back the absconding killers.

The apex court upheld the death sentence awarded to the 12 killers by a lower court in 1998.

The six fugitives are sacked Lt Col Abdur Rashid, Shariful Haq Dalim, Noor Chowdhury, Rashed Chowdhury, Captain Mazed and Risaldar Moslem Uddin.

According to reports, six of the 12 convicted killers of Sheikh Mujib were holed up in Libya, US, Canada, Pakistan and Kenya, while one died in Zimbabwe.

According to sources, Rashid, one of the key plotters of the massacre, has settled Libya, where he has been involved in construction business. He often visits Pakistan and Singapore, the report said.

Dalim lives in Pakistan, and frequently travels to Libya and Kenyan capital Nairobi where he has businesses, it said. The report, based on intelligence sources, said Nur Chowdhury and Rashed Chowdhury are in Canada and the US. Rashed is trying to secure asylum in the US.

Hasina-led Awami League initiated moves to sign extradition treaties with different countries to bring back the condemned convicts in 1996.

The five, who will face the gallows, are sacked army officers Lt Col Syed Faruq Rahman, Sultan Shariar Rashid Khan, Mohiuddin Ahmed, AKM Mohiuddin and Huda.

[chottala.com] President Obama's message and Hajj and Eid

    The White House Blog

    Hajj and Eid Mubarak

Pilgrims from over 160 countries, including nearly 20,000 Americans, have gathered in Saudi Arabia for the annual performance of the Hajj.  They have assembled in Mina and will travel to Arafat, Muzdalifah, and Mecca to offer the rites of pilgrimage. On Friday, Muslims around the world will celebrate Eid-ul-Adha.  The President issued the following statement today marking the beginning of Hajj and the upcoming Eid holiday:
Michelle and I would like to send our best wishes to all those performing Hajj this year, and to Muslims in America and around the world who are celebrating Eid-ul-Adha.  The rituals of Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha both serve as reminders of the shared Abrahamic roots of three of the world's major religions.
During Hajj, the world's largest and most diverse gathering, three million Muslims from all walks of life – including thousands of American Muslims – will stand in prayer on Mount Arafat.  The following day, Muslims around the world will celebrate Eid-ul-Adha and distribute food to the less fortunate to commemorate Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son out of obedience to God.
This year, I am pleased that the Department of Health and Human Services has partnered with the Saudi Health Ministry to prevent and limit the spread of H1N1 during Hajj.  Cooperating on combating H1N1 is one of the ways we are implementing my administration's commitment to partnership in areas of mutual interest.
On behalf of the American people, we would like to extend our greetings during this Hajj season – Eid Mubarak.
Translations available in Arabic, Persian, Dari, Urdu, Pashto, Russian and French.

[chottala.com] Philippines massacre: Death toll 57

    Philippines massacre: Death toll 57

Andal Ampatuan Jnr accused of personal involvement in massacre

Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr. of Unsay township, Maguindanao province in southern Philippines, holds his detainee number while being photographed inside his detention cell at the National Bureau of Investigation in Manila

    (Bullit Marquez/AP)

Andal Ampatuan Jr is accused of personal involvement in the killing of 57 people

The politician and clan leader accused of ordering the killing of 57 civilians in the southern Philippines last Monday personally beat and shot a number of his victims, according to witnesses.

Andal Ampatuan Jnr, the son of one of the most powerful men on the island of Mindanao, was allegedly seen slapping the wife of a political rival, who was later raped and killed, along with his political supporters, accompanying journalists, and innocent passers-by.

"One of the witnesses said he [Mr Ampatuan Jnr] was the one who was ordering them," the Philippines Justice Minister, Agnes Devanadera, told Manila television. "Another witness saw him firing his gun as well ... The order was to kill them all ... it appeared premeditated."

Ms Devanadera became visibly emotional when she described the way in which the bodies of the victims, around 22 of whom were women, were violated by their attackers.

"It was horrible," she said. "I cannot begin to describe it. Even the private parts of the women were shot at. It was horrible. It was not done to just one. It was done practically to all the women. All the women had their zippers undone. The pants of some were pulled down. We have yet to determine whether they were raped. But it is certain that something bad was done to them."

Fifty-seven bodies have been recovered from a hillside and from shallow graves close to the town that bears the name of Mr Ampatuan's family. Twenty-seven victims were journalists covering the registration of Ismael Mangudadatu, a candidate in next year's election for the governorship of Manguindanao province.

About 15 had no connections to the political campaign at all, but were simply driving past at the time the Mangudadatu convoy was stopped. They appear to have been killed because they would have been able to identify the murderers.

But, according to Ms Devanadera, members of the murder squad have stepped forward to testify against Mr Ampatuan. "They were bothered by their conscience," she said. "We have many witnesses, not just one."

Formal indictment on murder charges is expected today. "They [the prosecutors] will ask the court for Ampatuan Jnr to be denied bail," Ms Devanadera said." I don't see how he could get out of jail at this time, with the kind of evidence that we have."

According to the national police chief, Jesus Verzosa, six senior officers, including the provincial chief and his deputy, 20 officers of the Ampatuan police station, and around 400 members of a local militia loyal to the Ampatuan family are in custody, although not all are suspects.

"There's been a total misuse of our law enforcement personnel in the area, and complicity by law enforcement officers in this crime," the country's Interior Minister, Ronaldo Puno, said. "[The police] forgot that they should defend the Republic of the Philippines, not their Godfather."

Mr Mangudadatu, whose family are longstanding rivals of the Ampatuan clan, had asked his wife to register his nomination for the election for governor of Maguindanao, in the belief that as women they would not be attacked. She died, alongside his two sisters and two female lawyers.

Yesterday Mr Mangudadatu described confronting Mr Ampatuan Jnr at an airport building where he was initially questioned after handing himself in. "When I saw him, I wanted to chew him up, spit him out and stomp on him," he said afterwards.

Not all of the 57 victims were part of the convoy. Felicisimo Khu, a police officer who was supervising the retrieval of bodies on a grassy hilltop in Ampatuan township, said that the gunmen intercepted two other vehicles with six people who happened to be travelling on the same road at the same time — and killed and buried them too.

Yesterday, Mr Mangudadatu went ahead and personally filed his candidacy for election for governor, which is presently held by Mr Ampatuan Jnr's brother. "Only death can stop me from running," he said, holding up his certificate of candidacy. "This symbolises our freedom. I hope this will be the start of our liberation."

He was accompanied by soldiers, a police commander and a senior army general, and by Gilbert Teodoro, who is standing as a candidate in next year's presidential elections as the anointed successor to the incumbent, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

"The massacre brought international shame to the country, which is known to nurture Asia's freest press," said Mr Teodoro. "The eyes of the world are upon us because we just made history by having the biggest number of journalists killed in peace time since the invention of Johannes Gutenberg's printing press in 1439."

The atrocity is a personal embarrassment for Ms Arroyo who has been supported in the past by the Ampatuan family. widely suspected of being behind the killings. "I don't think the President's friendship with the Ampatuans will be severed," her spokeswoman, Lorelei Fajardo, said on Thursday. "Just because they're in this situation doesn't mean we will turn our backs on them."

A local employee of the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) worker was shot dead yesterday close to the site of the massacre. Nestor Bulahan was shot in the stomach by an unidentified gunman as he waited at a bus terminal, and died later in hospital. It is unclear whether the attack was related to the massacre four day earlier.

    Pakistani Biharis in Bangladesh.

    Dear chottala readers,
What James F. Moriatri is commenting now our Bongabandhu Sk. Mujibur Raman told it out of his kind hearted attitude towards Biharis after returning to Bangladesh in 1972 from detention in Pakistani jail for nine months during our liberation war. He told the Biharis "If you want to stay in Bangladesh live as Bangladeshi not as Pakistani". We also agree with our great leader Bongabandhu and want to tell Biharis they can stay in Bangladesh as a Bangladeshi not as Pakistani. For the last 40 years they are crying for Pakistan but Pakistan don't bother for them. If Biharis want to stay in Bangladesh they should learn Bengalis as their language not Urdu which Pakistani ruler wanted to impose over half of the population of Bengali speaking people in the then United Pakistan by telling urdu and urdu should be state language. Now these Biharis if wanted to merge with Bangladeshis they should learn their medium of language as Bengalis even in school and colleges and accept the Bangladeshi culture as a whole by forgetting their kinnes for urdu language and also for Pakistan for ever as our Bangladesh is now a reality as a separate independent country. They should accept the reality and they should admit the faults by asking apology what they did in 1971 by giving side with those Pakistanis who left them behind without any slightest sympathy and consideration for them.
    Dowllah.
