[chottala.com] Poet Farrukh Ahmed banned by PM Hasina

Is poet Farrukh Ahmed banned?
Shahriar Noori
(Weekly Holiday, May 13, 2011)

The government has quietly proscribed the writings of Farrukh Ahmed (1918-1974) in government publication without making any formal announcement. This banning of Farrukh's works in any government-sponsored publication is learnt to have been initiated by the prime minister's office (PMO) last year through the good offices of the Ministry of Information (MoI).
It is for the second time that the writings including the songs and dramas of Farrukh are being banned.
It may be pointed out that the late poet's monthly mention after his retirement had been stopped from 1972 -73 for allegedly supporting the war crimes of Pakistan Army in a report of a screening committee of the time. His monthly pension amounted to around taka 600 minus regular annual increment was restored after protests raised by the then leading intellectuals and poets, according to official publication. Ahmed Safa, a prominent writer who died a premature death a few years ago, took the lead.
Interestingly, his journalist son Sayed Ahmed Akhtar, who was working as a senior sub-editor in the official news agency BSS, was forced to resign.
In connection with the observance of Rabindranath Tagore's 150th birth anniversary, the ministry of the information published a collection of poems of 28 selected Bengali poets, including Kazi Nazrul Islam on Tagore in its monthly publication called Shachitra Bangladesh in October, 2010. However, Farrukh Ahmed's noted poem on Tagore was conspicuously absent. The publication was brought out reflecting the government's decision to show respect to the only Nobel Laureate on Bangla literature.
When asked how Farrukh Ahmed's poem on Tagore could be absent from the collection on Tagore, no official from the ministry agreed to talk, let alone explain the reason. One of them, however, hinted that it might have been dropped due to technical reason. On further query the official without elaborating said: "please don't use my words in any form in your story."
Poet Farrukh wrote an acclaimed poem in two parts on Tagore which was first published by a Kolkata-based literary magazine, Mrittika in 1946. It was published and edited by an influential writer Kazi Afseruddin Ahmed.
Farrukh, a great modern poet, whose poetic theme was based on resurgence of Islam. He has 17 books of poem to his credit. His first book Saat Sagarer Majhi was first published in 1944 and was an instant hit in undivided Bengal. The poet received President's Award in 1962, Bangla Academy award in 1962, Unseco award for writing on Children in 1964. The poet was restored in full honour by president Ziaur Rahman and received posthumously Ekushey Padak and Swadinata Padak in 1977 and 1980 respectively.

Subject: [notun_bangladesh] BNP dream to be ally of US is over after Bin Laden's killing !!!!!

Its now crystal clear that Pak. govt. was protecting & norturing Bin Laden ! Pakistan had been financed heavily by US to fight the terrorist activities of Al Qaida but instead of fighting, Pakistan was protecting the Al Qaida with US money. So US is very upset , relation with Pakistan is fragile now. On the other hand ,
Indo-US relation is much warmer now. US has finally realised that India is the real friend to fight Al Qaida not Pakistan. This Indo-US relationship has created a positive impact on present Bangladesh govt. Along with India , US think Sheikh Hasina is a trustworthy ally to fight terrorism in the sub-continent. So BNP's dream to be in good book of US has vanished with the killing of Bin Laden. With Prof. Yunus issue BNP was
trying to " Catch fish in dirty water", Khaleda Zia's upcoming US visit will not bring any positive result
in circumstances of the present situation. So, Shamsher Mabin and the gang are very nervous with the upcoming visit.

Dr. Manik

Mr. Abu Zafar Mahmood, probably this is the lousiest write-up I have read in many years whether in content or style. With this poor intellect you call yourself a free-lance Journalist and Political analyst!!!! Please read your own article one more time, you will be ashamed to find it is a worthless piece of writing which contradicts with one paragraph with other, from the beginning to the end, what a terrible waist of web content space.

However I will advice you to  keep writing, one day you might see the light!

Thanking you,
Shamim Chowdhury

Sheikh Hasina is out of Bangladesh-US relation

By: Abu Zafar Mahmood, US

The Prime Ministers son and her adviser feels nervous as well as frustrated as failed to get interview with US Senators in Washington DC. The Senators are busy and could not have time for schedule with him. That happened in first week of May one after one.

On the other hand, Ex-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia will come in US on Saturday May 21 and will leave on Friday May 27.She will be busy in Washington DC to meet with Secretary of State and Ex-first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and at least 5 highly important policy makers. Vice-President Joseph Biden might welcome her in meeting also. Noble laureate Professor Mohammad Yunus arranged the US schedule for Bangladeshi Leader. Undoubtedly it will be a significant and meaningful start.

Bangladeshis in United States are preparing to welcome Ms. Zia with warm-heart reception in New York. Dr. Mujibur Rahman Majumder is the Convener of the reception preparatory committee . Venue: Sheraton New York Hotel and Tower on 811, 7th avenue, Manhattan on May 22 at 5.30pm.Interestingly Khaleda Zia is appearing as the saver of US-Bangladesh relation and a symbol of balanced diplomacy for Bangladesh.

On behalf of Ex-Prime Minister 17 visa requests were submitted in US Embassy in Dhaka and all are honored with no question. This surprising news of Bangladesh politics has started blowing new breeze in diplomatic circle and government administration in Dhaka. Shamser Mubeen Chowdhury, the foreign relation adviser of ex-Prime Minister moves faster with calculated steps. Side changing also has started. Bangladesh is taking US sides clearly with the next leadership.

US Embassy in Dhaka denied the visa request as Bangladesh Foreign Minister was not needed to attend in a global forum that was advised by Dr. Susan Elizabeth Rice, the permanent representative in United Nations. United Nations had the meeting. The member countries were invited by Secretary General Ban ki- moon that was mentioned in article Dipu Moni was denied for US visa in 1stweek of April in internet websites and blocks at a time. Where she requested for 11 visas as she did many lot of times. These extras never return back. She is also suspected for money laundering too. However, the main content of article has carried the message of US wakening on Sheikh Hasina government and unmasked the face of the greatest super power on distancing from this Government.

I made alert Bangladesh about the imminent danger whereas Minister Dipu Moni and foreign Ministry have been misleading intentionally and purposefully as she assigned for. Bangladesh has failed to maintain the balanced trends in foreign relations. The anti-US policy of Hasina government, whether it is covert or overt, is a mere baby-fun with fire and welcoming the tsunami at own home.

US Embassy in Dhaka is adapting hard scrutiny for questioned marked persons regarding their entrance in United States. It includes ministers, MPs, Politicians, Businesspersons, diplomats, Artists, Educationists, civil bureaucrats (Military, Police in service and retired) etc. This list is long and most of those are related with present government though there are many that dont belong government alliance also. The multiple visa holders of this list will find rejection at the time of request of entering in United States. Though the Embassy becomes more liberal for the common Bangladeshis.

I repeat, the relation between US Government and present Bangladesh government is not friendlier and the Minister bluffs if she says it remains as worm as it was at the beginning of this government. This turn is the output of anti-US policy of Hasina government and failure of balanced diplomatic policy whereas the pro-government political intellectuals are arguing and painting this hard-line move as the return in liberation war spirit of 1971.

The trial of pro-Pakistanis in the name of war crime as now been initiated and taking shelter under Indian dominion is the main spirit of muktizudder Chetopa and conflicting against US-China-Islamic countries-Pakistan is the ideology of Bongo-Bondhu Mujibur Rahman as they adapt as the great alliances political line. This government is returning to 1972 constitution and returning to political line of 1971 liberation war spirit as their political party manifesto.

Though Kader siddiquee Biruttam and A S M Abdur ROB thatwell-honored for contribution in liberation war, are opposing the government for such childish big mouthing and blackmailing the nation. The anti-Awami league largest political camp BNP also remains out of Government line where all most all Islamic social and political groups stand against govt. and are creating political turmoil across the country. All political groups are criticizing the undemocratic manner and one-eyed foreign policy of the government.

Under such political conflicting situation, the policy of muscling on Grameen bank and noble laureate professor Yunus unmasked the inner face of the government worldwide. Sheikh Hasina uses her Prime Minister position to damage the Bangladeshi world leader and at the same time highlighting Indian Hindu noble laureates as she is assigned to execute such design.

In many open discussions, the possibility of drop down of Hasina government is almost common now a day. Even the senior Awami League Leaders are also passing the same opinions everyday as others. Government officials also find different currents in the flow of air. Foreign diplomats already are not seen in Prime Ministers meetings.

Due to the US-Indian conflict of interests in Bangladesh, the drop down of pro-Indian Hasina government is counting the days and searching the avenues to hide from Bangladesh in emergency. Grameen bank and noble laureate Yunus issue has been ringing the bell abroad for creating open supports for US attempt.

The immediate past Prime Minister is scheduled to visit America in May 22 to find the support from State department for her acquiring governance powers in Dhaka though her two sons and closest aides are widely accused for crimes and thrives. Her junior aged two sons became owner of huge money that seems abnormal and raises question marks. Her party BNP is also accused for harboring terrorism and also at the same time publicly believed as B team of pro- Indian brokers.

The Great alliance and the previous care taker government have been bringing the accusations in public though it is not proved by the court yet.

(1)Who will take over the steering of the government in that situation? (2) How far the parliamentary democracy contributed in strengthening the democratic structures under brute majority in parliament? (3)Does it strengthen the security and sovereignty of Bangladesh? (4) How far it unites the citizens to advance towards grabbing the partnership of the global opportunities?(5) Why the parliament turned as the club of fun and jokes?6) What is the remedy of Continuous disaster in share market?(7) Why Prime Minister, her Ministry, great alliance and parliament jointly pushing the Muslims to confront the government?

(8)How many foreign Intelligence teams are using Bangladesh as their practice ground?(9) Why Bangladeshi Intelligence teams are damaged and broken under present government?(10) What is the purpose of bringing huge US small arms in Bangladesh and why the DGFI and NSI staffs had to carry all these arms, instead of daily labors, from Dhaka airport to cantonment under US army pressure?(11) Why America has abandoned Osama and his terrorists issue from Bangladesh whereas Hasina and her loyalists are beating the same drums?

In the meantime the 1/11 group found active and they will oppose Bops regaining power at anyhow. Serajul Alam Khan also trying organize political platform to show his credibility and to appear in bargaining in time during staging the next drama. However, the political rivalry in Bangladesh might turn in muscle contest very soon. Though the peace coming citizens have been crying for democratic rights.

[chottala.com] GDP gap BD vs. Pakistan?

Banga BonDho Sh. Mujib had the right idea. He had wanted to impose Communism. Communism has proven to be the fastest way to advance. Russia was the poorest of Europe. Just in 35 years, not only it had become the richest country of the world but the most advanced and a World Super Power. Communist China now is advancing fastest in history of world.

Nationalization have kicked out non Bengali kinsmen of pakistani autocrats from their business empire, and while privatization took place Bengali business people rose providing jobs and subcontracts to Bengalis. Please read (below the article by
Fakhruddin Ahmed
) to know  how deadly against Bangladesh  are Hasina and her sycophants . They turned against the whole world to fulfill their selfish end. They are not satisfied with the thousands of crore taka  looted from Share market and now want to grab Grameen bank, Grameen phone and other sister organizations of Grameen. The whole world is with Yunus but Hasina and her looter groups are against him.

Yunus' place in history is secure

Fakhruddin Ahmed

The Bangladesh Supreme Court has upheld the High Court's verdict that Professor Yunus's removal from Grameen Bank is legal. So Professor Yunus has been permanently removed as the managing director of his brainchild, Grameen Bank. This is a sad day for Bangladesh.

The decision will embolden those who had always opposed Professor Yunus, such as the religious fundamentalists and others opposed to women's empowerment. It will dishearten the shareholders of the bank, the poor women of Bangladesh, who will see their bank deteriorate into an average bank of Bangladesh, rather than remaining a Nobel Prize winning institution it is.

The reticent majority of Bangladeshis, who had taken silent pride in Professor Yunus's monumental achievements, many intellectuals among them, will be crestfallen. They will have a hard time comprehending why all the machinery of the country's government was marshaled to bring down Bangladesh's brightest jewel.

There is a dichotomy in the way the Bangladeshi government and the rest of the world view Professor Yunus. To the capitalist and socialist world, and everything in between, Professor Yunus, through pioneering microcredit for the poor is a champion of the poor. Since most of the world's population is poor, he is the symbolic benefactor of the majority of the people on earth, and is a hero to them.

When Professor Yunus visits Mexico, poor peasants rush to touch him! He transcended his Bangladeshi credentials long ago and has become an iconic figure of the world. The world emulates, celebrates and glorifies him like no other person on earth.

To the Bangladeshi government, Muhammad Yunus is just another Bangladeshi operating from a Spartan, non-air-conditioned office in measly Mirpur, pretending to be great!

Bangladesh is a poverty-stricken nation facing enormous challenges. Instead of tackling those challenges, it is astonishing how much time and resources the government wasted attempting to bring down the one person who has brought maximum honour to the nation.

Professor Muhammad Yunus is being "removed on a technicality." If, after hounding Professor Yunus for over two years, the best the government can come up with is a "technicality," it vividly demonstrates not only how irrational and hollow the government's misguided pursuit has been, but also how scrupulously clean Professor Yunus is.

Foreign governments care deeply about Muhammad Yunus, whom they know very well and adore. The writer was surprised at how quickly every section of the civil society in America -- the press, ordinary Americans, prominent Americans and elected representatives -- reacted with universal repugnance at Professor Yunus's "removal." Elected governments gain admiration and legitimacy only when they act within the letter and spirit of the law, not when driven by rancour.

Bengalis embody two diametrically opposite character traits. The admirable one is generosity. A visitor to a Bengali household will insult the host if he refuses to eat something.

The darker trait is envy, which the first Bengali and Asian to win the Nobel Prize (1913), Rabindranath Thakur, lamented about. Every Bengali knows this uncontrollable urge to pull someone down who is headed up. This urge unifies some Bengalis like nothing else.

The discourse about Professor Yunus has revealed that some Bangladeshis have not been able to exorcise their jealousy demons. Much more pleasure can be derived from praising someone than demonising him. The angels descend on a person being complimented while the devil envelops the person practicing envy. The whole world applauds executives who salute a Nobel Laureate. Perhaps Yunus should have been born in another country that was capable of appreciating his genius.

Many in the Bangladesh government do not seem to realise that Muhammad Yunus had flown out of their grasp long time ago. They may imprison his body, but his free spirit belongs to the whole world. Placing hurdles in Professor Yunus's way will only make him soar higher.

Unlike neighbouring Myanmar, Bangladesh has not closed its borders to the world. As a democracy, Bangladesh is plugged into the world in every way, and is susceptible to the world's adverse reaction. The civil society, the press and prominent citizens all over the world have reacted adversely to Professor Yunus's removal. Their governments will, too, because in civil societies governments act on public opinion.

The government of Bangladesh had garnered the goodwill of the world and America over the last two years for the way it conducted its domestic and foreign policies. By treating Professor Yunus shabbily, in spite of repeated pleas not to do so, they have squandered most of it.

It is unwise to characterise US Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake's comment that mistreatment of Professor Yunus will impact US-Bangladesh relations as his personal opinion. Top US diplomats' enunciation of American foreign policy is never a "personal opinion." Ninety-nine percent of expatriate Bangladeshis in America believe that the government of Bangladesh has abused the nation's only Nobel Laureate.

Surprisingly, leave alone resigning, no one in the government has taken any different view over the Yunus controversy. When they embark on or support unjust vendettas, not only nations, but also reputations of individuals responsible become affected internationally. The world is watching and taking notes.

If the government was smart, instead of hounding Professor Yunus, it would have appointed the Nobel Laureate Bangladesh's goodwill ambassador to the world and tapped into the enormous goodwill the world has for him. Harassing Professor Yunus will prove counterproductive. The ongoing protests against the current government at home and abroad will only intensify.

Detractors of Professor Yunus beware! His concept of social business is also a novel idea. Do not be surprised if somewhere down the line Professor Yunus becomes the only person ever to win the Nobel Prize for Peace twice.

Regardless of what the government of Bangladesh does, Professor Muhammad Yunus's place in history as one of the greatest men of the last one hundred years is very secure.
