[chottala.com] A Few Good People

Dear brothers and sisters,

There is no denying the fact that we all are living in a very unsafe society.  We often fall prey to different evil actions performed by some of our fellow society-members.  It's very unfortunate that we mostly fail to seek and receive proper protection from the appropriate authorities responsible to provide them to all citizens.  We always hope and pray that things would get better and we would live peacefully in our societies.  Such a situation seems, to many of us, unachievable in a foreseeable future.  What we can do in this state of affairs?  Can we think of a shield that we may build around us with a view to securing ourselves and our properties?

Here I am making a suggestion that I urge upon you all to give a look and let me know if you have any comment/suggestion on it.  I am proposing this basing on a recent mail sent by one of our group members, Mr. Helal who lives in Toronto.  He made a point that we may not run after or waste our energy on unnecessary matters and try to help our society (and ourselves) as much as it is possible for us through some positive actions.  I am just proposing an idea that could (possibly) solve some of our problems in our day to day life.  This is a draft proposal (or project) that I have suggested the title "A few good people."  May I request you all to give it a glance and give me a kind feedback please!

A Few Good People

In our entire history Bangalee as a people, race or nation have been independent only twice; first, in the seventh century under the rule of Shashaka (600 – 625 AD) and second, now after 1971.  From the history we can learn that the first period, though short lived, was quite glorious.  But, the second period, that has already crossed the tenure of the first one, can not, at any rate, be called a glorious one.

Our people, in general, are very nice-behaving and peace-loving.  When you go to an unknown place and meet people whom you have never met before and seek help you are sure to find a host of people highly eager to come forward to assist you.  If you have a broken-down car there would gather dozens of people ready to push it for miles or for any other assistance you may need.  This is just one side of the story.  It may not surprise you finding people looting a bus that has just faced an accident instead of taking care of the injured.  We are, indeed, a very unpredictable people on earth who may not behave very rationally at each event.

Whenever we are asked "how are you?" we generally reply "fine."  Are we really fine?  The aspect, undoubtedly, is relative.  Let me explain it little further.  Leaving aside some exceptions, if I am a successful businessman I may not have any problem in facing my financial needs.  If I am a lawyer or a police person or, may be, a person from any uniform, I may be quite confident to confront any legal problem that may arise.  If I am a doctor my healthcare may be ensured.  If I am a university teacher my children are likely to have no big trouble for their higher education, so and so forth.  But, a doctor may have problems in legal matters.  For example, if he needs to buy a piece of land he might face problems with out consulting an expert in that field.  There are even more serious problems.  When the doctor had consulted a broker for the land purchase he may, at a later stage, find that the broker has been looking after the interest of the land seller instead of his.  Next, the doctor goes to police or a lawyer to address the mater.  Here too he has reasons to be apprehensive.  The problems we face don't end rather at times they give rise to chain problems.

I would like to propose, let us make a group of people that we may name "A few good people."  As we start forming this group there would be members from various communities.  There would be some teachers, some lawyers, some students, some doctors, some businesspersons (from various types of businesses), some members from police or armed forces or other law-enforcing agencies, some intellectuals, some income-tax or custom officials, some journalists, some media persons, human-rights specialists/activists, persons from cultural domain and many other fields.

What would be the purpose of the group?  First, we may seek advice from the members dealing with a particular area, like law and order or healthcare etc.  We would provide advices on the net or through other means.  If we need consultancy or even physical help we may provide that.

We may not expect that the help would always be voluntary and free of cost.  Professionals may expect reasonable fees for providing such service.  The mission of this group would be to "Assist fellow members with honesty and sincerity maintaining ethics."

Why ethics!  It has frequently been observed that many a time we go out of the way and try to rescue a relative or friend.  This may cause serious damage or injustice to the counterpart.  For example, helping a person in legal matters who might have committed a heinous crime could seriously damage the objective of the project.

The first and foremost step of this project would be to assemble persons who would be honour-bound to remain in the path of true ethics and morality.  We would not cause any trouble for anyone else nor would like to be a victim of such actions by anyone in the society.

A few examples of assistance that may be sought from a fellow member (friend):

1.                  My son who is studying in Australia is coming back home in a flight that would reach ZIA at 0330 hours this morning.  I live in Ranpur and would not be able to reach the airport for some unavoidable reasons.  I would expect Mr. Hassan, who lives in Uttara to kindly receive my son and lodge him upto 1000 hours at his residence when I shall be able to reach and collect my son.  Why would I need this help?  Had it been anywhere other than Bangladesh my son could have taken a yellow-cab and reached a relatives house (who doesn't own a car) or even could start for Rangpur hiring a microbus.  In Bangladesh, unfortunately, there are more likelihood that he could be robed or there could be a life-threat in case of such an adventure (or misadventure).

2.                  One of my young relatives, who I personally know, has gone to Dhaka for attending an interview for a job.  He was taken by police at Kallyanpur as a result of a mass-arrest (gono-greptar).  I may request Additional SP Mr. Moazzem Hossain to try to arrange his release so that he could attend the interview as per schedule and come back home as planned.  We all know such or similar cases can happen in our country anytime.  One thing I must ensure that I would certainly certify the young-man to be a clean person who could not involve himself in such case that could be proved and embarrass Mr. Hossain at a later stage.

3.                  I live in Muktagachha.  My daughter is a student in Dhaka University who resides in one of the residential hostels.  The University authorities have orders all the students to vacate the halls by 2100 hours tonight.  I would request Mrs. Borhan to kindly go the hall-gate and bring my daughter to her home and keep her in safe-custody in her house until I go and collect her.

4.                   My Sister in law's marriage is scheduled on next Friday. My Father in law lives in Kotchandpur.   One of her college-mates, who also lives in the same town, has been disturbing her for last one year, has threatened to throw acid on her.  I would request Mr. Aminul Islam, an Assistant Director in RAB to help though his links that OC, Kotchandpur Thana takes necessary measures so that the ceremony could be conducted with out any trouble and the family could be provided some sort of protection from any miscreant actions.

In our day to day life we always face a lot of problems for which we don't find any reliable persons to provide honest support or service even after making good amount of payment.  I am sure there are lots of good persons in our society who would like to help sufferers/victims with their expertise, honest and courage.  This would also make us feel strong to fight the evil powers in our society that ultimately provides us the necessary protection.

What do you think?????
