[chottala.com] Fw: Death of Our Son Dr.Jalal Alamgir (Shuvo)

Many people have been asking what happened to our beloved eldest son, Dr. Jalal Alamgir (Shuvo) on December 3, 2011. We wanted to post this message so that others can avoid such tragic mistakes that led to Jalal's early departure.

Our son Jalal and his wife Fazeela went to Phuket, Thailand, to visit Fazeela's cousin, Shahid Ramez Sayeedur Rahman (Sagor), and his wife Charlotte Record, and their two children. They are locals of Phuket.

Ramez (Sagor) took all of them to the Yanui Beach in Phuket late morning on December 3, 2011. Yanui Beach is a Zone 1 beach in Phuket, among Zones 1, 2, and 3. Zone 1 is classified most dangerous among the three zone classification and has limited safety facilities. Jalal rented some snorkeling gear near the beach. After that, they went in the water of Yanui Beach, with Jalal snorkeling and the others swimming near the shore.

After a while, Jalal's wife, Fazeela, and Ramez's wife Charlotte left the beach for lunch with one of the children, and Ramez (Sagor), along with his other child, was in the water with Jalal.

Ramez (Sagor) left a little bit later with the other child. When asked about what had happened, Ramez (Sagor) said he waved at Jalal. He also said Jalal did not respond, or wave back at that time. Ramez left none-the-less to join the others for lunch. At this point Jalal was alone in the water.

A short while after this, Jalal shouted for help, but none of his traveling companions were there. We do not know how many times he shouted for help, but a South African couple, Pete Reynolds and his wife heard at-least two shouts. They thought the first shout was Jalal calling for someone. On the second shout that they heard they realized there was trouble and rushed to his aid.

Jalal was about 40-50 meters from the shore, so it took Pete and his wife at least 4-7 minutes to reach Jalal. By that time, Jalal was face down in the water.

Pete and his wife flipped Jalal over. They pulled him to shore, which took at least another 7-12 minutes. Two lifeguards came to help when Pete and his wife approached the shore, and assisted in bringing Jalal to the beach.

Some time after that, Fazeela started to go toward the beach to look for Jalal. She saw a commotion on the beach, went nearby and realized it was Jalal and screamed for help. Fazeela's cousin, Ramez (Sagor) came over and shouted for a doctor at that time.

After hearing the commotion, a British Nurse, Trish, and her husband Mark came to help. According to them, it could not be known for certain how long Jalal was in the water or on the beach before they arrived. Trish, being a nurse, took over CPR, assisted by Mark. According to Mark, Jalal's pupils were fixed at this time. About 15 minutes after that, an oxygen mask was brought over by the lifeguards, as reported by Mark. In another 15 minutes an ambulance arrived. Trish wanted to apply a defibrillator on Jalal but neither the lifeguards nor the ambulance had defibrillators.

Jalal was placed in the ambulance, and taken away. The ambulance was met by additional paramedics from another ambulance en-route to the hospital. Doctors were not able to successfully revive Jalal at the hospital, which was about 30 minutes away from the beach.

The above is based on eye-witness accounts from both Pete Reynolds and Mark Robson, as they along with their wives, were the first responders.

We want to make note of a few very important points:

1. A week before Jalal's death, a Russian tourist died at the same beach.

2. A couple weeks after Jalal's death, a French tourist died at the same beach.

3. Yanui Beach has a very high number of rescues of tourists by travel companions and/or lifeguards each year per local newspapers. We believe that such deaths and rescues are typically part of local knowledge.

Some lessons can be learned from our son's tragic death, so that such tragedy does not befall onto others' loved ones in the future.

1. Please do not leave your loved ones alone in water

2. If you have visitors to your place, please take them to safe areas, and not to areas that have high incident and casualty rates

3. Please advise your loved ones to wear life vests in open water

We also want to note that finding the circumstances of Jalal's death has been difficult for us as we had to rely on third party eyewitness accounts. Only after that, Jalal's traveling companions provided their accounts of events. While we wish no one ever faces such tragedy, if such tragedy does occur the deceased's loved ones would expect an open account of the circumstances of death without any speculation.

Sincerely,
Dr. Jalal Alamgir's father & mother,
Dr. Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir & Mrs. Sitara Alamgir
