Pakistan : Death of a Nation by Akbar Hussain

If it is true that the founder of Pakistan have said' Pakistan was his greatest blunder' he would have been vindicated now. What we are watching now is the gradual disintegration of a sovereign state at the hands of the religious extremists, the same sovereign state created in the name of religion. A nation for which an aroma of religious fervour was so zealously created and maintained by so many religious zealots for the last sixty years. The end result is chaos, mistrust and bloody conflict. Many apologists who still foolishly claims that it was a right decision at that time now scratches their heads was it a wrong decision at a worst time?  Mr. Muhammad Ali Jinnah saw this beginning of the end during his life time when his secular vision of an Islamic nation was hijacked by those people who helped him to create this new nation. He was alone against Rome . From the very onset the so called ideology of Islam was a failed cry for Pakistan . The Holy Spirit of Islam failed to unify the various regions of Pakistan in the name of religion. Sind , Balochistan and the NWFP remained unconvinced and the lofty dream of a Pure Land remained unfulfilled. It did not take much time for Mr.Jinnah to realise that he has committed a blunder and the shock and awe of the situation took his life just  one year after the Partition of India. Since than Pakistan was just limping and in that progressively weakening situation the Frankenstein of Islamic fundamentalism took birth and now it has reached its adulthood. The birth of Pakistan was in the name of religion but the hidden agenda was the parochial interest of the Muslim landed Junkers who saw a danger to their vested interests in a free united India .

The bloody and treacherous history of Pakistan is basically a history of struggle against its own people. The rejection of religion as a basis for national integrity and unity never understood by the successive regimes whose only answer was brute force. We saw it in the then East Pakistan , in Sind , in Balochistan and in the NWFP. Even two years before Gen.Musharraf threatened the Balochi people that 'it was not 1970' when Pakistan played havoc in East Pakistan . The failure of Pakistan as a nation has taught us again that religion can never be a basis for a state. Nations are made out of a concord between the people on the basis of historical realities. But unfortunately still we have people among us who subscribe to the evil idea of a state on the basis of religion. They still viciously try to promote the idea of religious laws to run the affairs of the state. We must guard against those followers of the Islamic Frankenstein who are out to dismember and dismantle everything the mankind has achieved so fare.
