"I am very pleased to meet you"

... was how Gen. Moeen greeted Sajeeb Wazed Joy at lunch today. Regardless of whatever can be said about MUA, one has to give him style-points.

Today at KSG (are you sick of this topic yet?), Gen. Moeen sat down for a lunch meeting with 4 KSG students of Bangladeshi origin + the spouse of one of the students, some KSG professors, and 7-8 people in his entourage: a total of 17-18 people.

As today's guest blogger wrote, Gen. Moeen had apparently asked for a meeting with Joy. It may not have been prudent for Joy (actually, his mother) to refuse the meeting, and meeting 1-on-1 would have raised too many ugly questions. We believe Joy finessed this beautifully by asking to meet in public with other students.

After lunch, MUA did a video presentation of arsons, fires and mayhem during the strikes, and explained under what circumstances 1/11 happened. This, I suppose, was the "seminar" Amader Shomoy reported about.

After that, he opened up the room to questions. Joy asked 3 questions (paraphrased):
Q. When will emergency be withdrwan:
A: The government will decide--I am not really involved in that

Q. My mother is in Jail without any being convicted, and she can not effectively pursue her defense while she is in jail. Will you allow her to be released, and follow civil law?
A. I will be very happy if she comes out clean, but I have nothing to do this this; justice will take its own course

Q. Democracy restoration and electorial reforoms will not be successful unless political parties are involved in the process. Will you allow that?
A. I have nothing to do with it; the EC is already talking to the political parties and they will be involved.

Impressive non-answers.

Another Bangladeshi student asked:
Q. Instead of political parties forming the next government, will it be better to have a national unity government?
A. There are views in the country on both sides; I do not have any opinion on this

We hope our friends from BNP won't go ballistic over this, and our friends from AL, on the other hand, won't go all ga-ga about this being an indication of Joy's status as the crown prince. It is just one meeting. As MUA pointed out last night, the king can die or horses can fly over the course of a year (more on that later)

Despite the secret/public meeting and the mystery with the invitations from Harvard, we think Gen. Moeen took a positive step. We just wish he had asked his local friends to arrange a true public meeting.

There. HarvardGate is now done. Now we will wait for BankGate II: Return of the Auditors.
