[chottala.com] Re: Goom/Khoon: 14 killed in political violence in July

Secret killing reaches alarming level in Bangladesh

After recovery of 13 dead bodies just within August 3~9 from a city
suburban area in Bangladesh, the case of enforced disappearance and
secret killing has already topped the news headlines and talk shows in
the country, leaving every citizen of the country into extreme fear.
According to information, a railway station at Salna under Gazipur
district [only 15 kilometers from the capital city of Dhaka], everyday
a new dead body is found by the locals. Though law enforcing agencies
are claiming these murders to be act of inter-district railway
snatcher rackets, citizen of the country are demanding immediately
investigation into these murders, where more than 48 people dies just
within less than 30 days. Authorities of Bangladesh Railway say, "Such
murders are not only taking place at Salna railway station under
Gazipur district, but in almost all other districts in the country.
"Everyday we recover a number of dead bodies from the railway tracks
in Bangladesh", the authorities added. Though railway authorities are
trying to cover these murders as mere acts of the inter-district
railway snatcher rackets, it is apprehended by members of the civil
society that most of these murders might have been done by dubious
gangs, which are continuing enforced disappearance of various
individuals in the country. It may be mentioned here that, only during
past three and half years, more than five hundred people went missing
in the country, who were mostly picked up by plain-clothe members of
law enforcing or intelligence agencies. The latest case of enforced
disappearances of Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader M Ilian Ali, as
well as his driver has drawn attention of people around the world.
Earlier, chauffer of the assistant private secretary of former railway
minister Suranjit Sen Gupta went missing, who is still untraced. It is
even anticipated that the driver of the APS of the minister, either
was abducted by the armed cadres of the ruling party or members of the
law enforcing or intelligence agencies in Bangladesh. Similarly,
readymade garment workers rights activist Aminul Islam was abducted
and murdered few months back, which his family claims to be act of a
sensitive intelligence agency in the country.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Home Minister Sahara Khatun has told local media
that the mystery and "clue" behind murder of the journalist couple has
already been traced by the investigating agencies and the "culprits
will be soon booked". It may be mentioned here that, journalist couple
Sagor Sarwar, who was the news editor of a local television channel
and his wife Meherun Runi, who was a reporter with another private
television channel were slaughtered at their residence in the capital
few months back. It was later rumored that the journalist couple were
murdered as they unearthed the case of a high profile corruption in
the energy sector, wherefrom ruling party elites looted few hundred
millions dollars thus greatly depriving the nation and its citizen.
When the couple tried to put the contents of their findings in one of
the private television channels, the owner brought this matter to the
attention of some of the Supremos of the ruling party. Subsequently,
the owner was heavily compensated from passing this scoop and was
advised to refrain from airing any such materials submitted by the
journalist couple.

Sensing that the owner of the private television channel was already
purchased by the vested interest group, Sagor Sarwar and Meherun Runi
made next attempt of putting the same content on air with another
private television channel. At this stage, the owner of the channel,
who stopped airing the content was pressured by some extremely
influential figures in the government to "any how" recover the tapes
and the hard disks of the investigative report and evidences from the
possessions of Sagor Sarwar and his wife Meherun Runi.

Subsequently, following the tragic murder of Sagor Sarwar and his wife
Meherun Runi, the Prime Minister, the home minister, members of the
cabinet as well as many of the influential figures in the ruling party
continued to give misleading statements, while the controversial owner
of the private television channel even made attempts of character
assassination of Meherun Runi.
