DHAKA: Expatriate Bangladeshi workers, non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) and foreign citizens working or living in Bangladesh, can now open FC (foreign currency) accounts with zero balance, according to a guidelines issued by the Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Sunday. The Guideline for Foreign Exchange Transactions has allowed three categories of accounts for individuals—private foreign currency (FC) account, non-resident FC deposit (NFCD) account, and resident FC deposit (RFCD) account.

An entitled individual could open an account in any of these three categories, with zero balance, with any Authorised Dealer (AD) bank, and could deposit any amount between USD 1,000 and USD 5,000, for a minimum one-month period.

The depositors will receive interests on their deposits. The private FC account is for the persons living or working abroad and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh. A person keen to open an account will need to contact an AD bank.

No initial deposit will be required.

However, the minimum deposit requirement for NFCD is USD 1,000 for any Bangladeshi (expatriate, NRB and any Bangladeshi individual). For a foreign national working in Bangladesh, the minimum deposit is USD 25,000.

A depositor could use the deposited FC, while traveling abroad.

The RFCD is for expatriates who could open an account with any AD bank after coming back home
