[chottala.com] China refusing to go to war with USA for Pakistan

While China reacted fast to say what Pakistan should have said in its own defense, yet Beijing is in no hurry to fight Pakistan's battles resulting from the inability of Pakistani politicians and military to manage a relationship with a meddling and overbearing Washington.

.

"Any over-interpretation of Gilani's ongoing visit to China will prove to be superficial and speculative. It is hoped … diplomacy will help mend the fences and deepen mutual trust between Islamabad and Washington," wrote China Daily. "China hopes to see US-Pakistani relations improve as it is in the same boat with the two countries in fighting terrorism."

.

One indication of this came in an editorial in the European edition of China Daily newspaper on 18 May, a day after Mr. Gilani's arrival in Beijing. The editorial sought to dispel an impression created by the Pakistani media that China would somehow step in the shoes of the United States in terms of providing unchecked aid to Pakistan, or in terms of contesting US influence in Pakistan.

.

In private conversations, Chinese policy analysts are stunned at the level of dereliction of duty at the leadership levels of Pakistani government and military. The Chinese can't understand how senior Pakistani political and military officials could compromise the country's long term interest for short term or personal gain in the way they have managed the Pakistani-American relationship so far.

The initial weak political response of the government and military in Pakistan after the 2 May US incursion is also something that has engendered multiple interpretations in Beijing, the most prominent of them being 'incompetence'. The Pakistani policy-making circle is small and does not allow for generating policy ideas and options from a wider base of think-tanks and state institutions. The media management capabilities of the civilian and military bureaucracies are poor.

As a matter of fact, Pak Army had wanted China to go to war with USA if Pak Army was attacked by USA. China has flatly refused to do that and thinks, Pak Army asking such commitments from China does not understand this is 21st Century. China has politely informed Pak Army, "We are not at any kind of war with USA. We are with USA on question of worldwide Terrorism".
