Two reports on two Chief Justices and Daily Star’s Journalism Shimul Chaudhury | | The Bangladeshi English daily The Daily Star has a beautiful and meaningful motto, that is: “your right to know.� In other words, it assures us that it provides the full truth, not half-truths and half-facts. I am a regular reader of the English daily, and I also have the ‘right to know’. But let us compare two Daily Star reports, one published on Monday 23 June 2003 and the other on Thursday 12 May 2011. Both the reports are on the appointment of the Chief Justice of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, but during two regimes: BNP and Awami League.
One of those two reports was published on Monday 23 June 2003 and is titled “KM Hasan new CJ� . The other report was published on Thursday 12 May 2011 and is titled “Muzammel made chief justice� and is relatively shorter. The difference in length is because in the earlier report, the Daily Star provides some extra information. Although similar information is 100% relevant to the later report, the daily quietly ignored that.
Let me make it clear to my fellow readers. The 23 June 2003 report unambiguously begins with this sentence: “Justice KM Hasan was made the 13th chief justice yesterday in an appointment that superseded two judges of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.� The current regime committed the same ‘crime’ not once but successively twice. In September 2010, it had superseded Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman and appointed Justice ABM Khairul Haque the Chief Justice of the Bangladeshi premier court. Again on 11 May 2011 the regime superseded Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman and appointed Justice Md Muzammel Hossain the Chief Justice. In the news story “Muzammel made chief justice� of 12 May 2011, the Daily Star completely closed the eyes to the act of double supersession of Justice Mominur Rahman by the current regime; hence the report was comparatively shorter. I leave it to the judicious reader to judge if the Daily Star provided us with the full truth in its report “Muzammel made chief justice� (12 May 2011). Is the omission of the fact of two-time supersession inadvertent? Unfortunately, I do not think so.
A remarkable thing happened on 12 May 2011, which perhaps the Daily Star had not anticipated: Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman resigned obviously to register his protest against his being superseded two times. So finally, the Daily Star could not suppressed the truth of supersession and had to tell us the fully story in its 13 May 2011 issue. I request the Daily Star to be fair in its reportage. If that is practically not possible, I request it to change the motto “your right to know� to another phrase which will represent its reportage policy accurately.
