[chottala.com] THE UNJUST RULER AND THE ISLAMIC LAW OF REBELLION

AUTHORS NOTE

This is an article that I originally wrote in 2003 in light of events in Bangladesh and was largely inspired by a purchase of a book which I felt would ultimately have profound consequences and effects for the country if read widely enough. Unfortunately at the time there were very few people who could appreciate the implications of the book for Bangladesh but in 2009 things have changed quite dramatically after the Pilkhana massacre and the response of the Awami League government to that tragic incident.  In light of the judgment in the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Murder Case and probably the most often asked question, `Why was Sheikh Mujibur Rahman killed?' the article has now attained even more relevancy to contemporary thought and our views concerning the coup on 15th August 1975.

The following article should be viewed purely as an academic and intellectual exercise and not intended to promote any particular agenda or religious school of thought or secularist concept about society.  It is in the final analysis a comparative study of Islamic and secular approaches to a common issue that has arisen in both types of society.
