[chottala.com] Nuclear Power Plant option for Bangladesh !

Dear All

Mr. Ayubi is totally confused .....Yes, Bangladesh has a research
reactor, linear acceletor, neutron generator and quite a few other
nuclear devices with high level radiation safety standards....

But a research reactor & power reactors for electricity generation
are different from the operational point of view. The objective of
3 MW TRIGA Mk-II Research Reactor of Bangladesh is mainly for
production of radioisotope for medical & agriculture applications.
It has also been used for various research like neutron activation
analysis (NAA), neutron radigraphy (NRG), neutron scattering
experiments.

The General Atomic TRIGA Mk-II is definitely not a "nucxlear pilot
poject" for future Nuclear Power Plants for electricity generation
in Bangladesh.  as Mr. Ayubi tries to emphasize !

"Scaremongering ???????"......
Distortion of facts is long-time habit of  Salah Uddin Ayubi..
It is really a shame ! Where did he find Scaremongering in my
post(s) ? Perhaps Mr. Ayubi does not know Precaution and
Scaremongering are two different things ......

I am in no-way opposed to building nuclear power plants in
Bangladesh. Our engineers are quite capable of safe operation
of Nuclear Power Plants or any other sophisticated modern
technology under proper requlatory guidence.

Mr. Salah U. Ayubi's description of Nuclear vis-a-vis Conventional
power plant is uniquely superficial and mechanistically simplistic ...

But, that is besides the point in the current context of
Electrification of Bangladesh .....[However, we must not forget
that Core Meltdown / Loss of Coolant Accident [LOCA] creates
entirely different scenerio for each Power Plant types ..... the devils
are in the details ....]

The current efforts for Bangladesh to Go Nuclear and seriously
explore the possibilities are definitely praiseworthy   ..... But we
must be very serious about our vendor selection criteria ..... we
must determine what we need and what we want first ..... and not
be driven by the  sales pitches of any particular  country or supplier .....
"matter of convenience" should not be the driving force when
select the supplier ,,,,,,

In matters of Rosatom/Atomenergoprom  reactors, I am personally
very concerned about its operational safety and design defects.
However, these need to be investigated by our Nuclear Engineers
and radiation safery experts...

There are many other aspects of Going Nuclear for Electricity
generation ....Thus, I repeat my recommendation that
Bangladesh Government should set up a multi-disciplinary body
for in-depth feasibility study on Nuclear Power Plant option in
Bangladesh
and vendor selection based on our needs, not on the
supplier's sales pitches.

The important factors include:

  • Launching cost
  • Issues related to construction contract and potential delays

Continous fuel supply,
  • Operational safety,
  • Radioactive waste disposal including Issue of foreign vendor taking back spent fuel to their own waste repository in their own country.
  • Future plant-life extention
  • Decomissioning at the end of life
  • Nonproliferation issues/International Nuclear Politics etc       .
  •         Clearly, Mr.     Salah U. Ayubi has basic attitude problem
which is evident through his post
where Salahuddin Ayubi wrote:"Netris husband is nuclear scientist
of repute . If she requires advise on the dsubject then she can get
it home at no cost. Unsolicited advise in this respect is not
    appreciated.- Ayubi"

No more politically motivated pinch of scarsm on national issues please!
Constructive criticism and honest difference of opinion & discussion will
    always be appreciated !

Mr. Aslam possibly is not aware that a very small nucxlear pilot poject is in operation for many years under our atomic energy commission.  Technically we are capable of looking after a nuclear reactors. Many countries of the world are increasingly depending on nuclear power.
The difference between a conventional power plant and nuclear power plant is very little> In both cases the generator is run from a steam turbine . Turbine receives steam brom a boilder. A coal fired,/oil fired/ gasfired furnace proveds the energy to convert water into steam. In the nuclear power plant the furnace is replaced by a nuclear reactor. There is nothing so great in nuclear technology that our nuclear scientist can nnot handle. Scaremongering by people like you will only damge the development of the energy starved country like ours. There are many countries of the world who have nuclear power plants who do not have the qualified manpower that we have.  Scaremongering will not help the country or its development.
You may not be aware that even merchat ship was powered by nuclear power some forty years ago. The world has come a long way from there sir.

Subject: [notun_bangladesh] Nuclear Power Plant option for Bangladesh !

    Dear All

Perhaps Mr. Salauddin Ayubi has a very little knowledge about what a Nuclear Power Plant [popularly known as Nuclear Power Reactor] is!!!

Dr. Wajed Ali Miah holds a in PhD from Germany in Nuclear Physics which deals with nuclear reactions ...

Nuclear Physics (mainly Neutronics & Shielding ) is only a part of Nuclear Power Plant
Technology. As such a multi-disciplinary approach for in-depth feasibility study on  Nuclear Power Plant options & decision making is needed.

Mr. Salah Uddin Ayubi can say "Unsolicited advise in this respect is not appreciated. ..."  on his own belalf only ......

However, my comments are views of a concerned citizen and should be viewed as such ....

Nuclear physics has assortment of industrial application and each application field spreads into different regions of science and technology viz radiation therapy,  medical dignostics, geophysical measurement, industrial process control, security,
power generation etc. However, a person trained in nuclear physics is not
necessarily an expert in those application fields.

    Thanks

Salauddin Ayubi probably doesn't have adequate knowledge in respect of nuclear energy. Otherwise, how can he build up such a stupid comment on such a wonderful statement offered by Syed Aslam to the forum that has imparted valuable knowledge on the subject. Does Ayubi know that a doctor asks another doctor to do a physical check on the requesting doctor when he is sick.

Subject: Russia suggests setting up 1,000 MW nuclear power plant in Bangladesh

Rosatom/Atomenergoprom  reactors are inherently unsafe and
not suitable for thickly-populated country like Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Government should set up a multi-disciplinary body
for in-depth feasibility study on Nuclear Power Plant option in
Bangladesh [launching cost, fuel supply, operational safety,
waste disposal, nonproliferation issues etc]. Any foreign nuclear
power reactor vendor should take back spent fuel from the facility
to their own waste repository in their own country.

Any construction contract and potential delays resulting from
contractual disputes between the vendor country and Bangladesh
must be thorowly scrutinized prior to the selection of the vendor
    and execution of any contract.
