[chottala.com] 452 get TAC mercy

The now defunct Truth and Accountability Commission (TAC) granted mercy to a total of 452 people including former state minister Major (retd) Qamrul Islam, BNP leader Mosaraf Hosain Thakur, Dr Md Afzal Hossain Raj son of former adviser of caretaker government Justice Fazlul Huq, deputy secretaries Fasihuddin and Sankar Kumar Das and joint secretary Surut Zaman, teacher of mathematics department of the Chittagong University Md Fazleh Hossain, all of whom made voluntary confession about their ill-gotten wealth, in the five-month duration of the commission from July 30 last year.

In total 491 people had sought mercy from TAC but 39 applicants did not turn up..
Those who got mercy had to pay a price for it. TAC realised Tk 34 crore as fine.

Of the 452 people, 25 are businessmen, 351 government servants, 2 politicians and 20 from other professions. Besides TAC granted mercy to 54 women who are wives of government servants.

The list of those who applied for and got mercy makes an interesting reading. A staggering 94 belong to Titas gas company, 33 roads and highways, 33 DESA, 20 forest department, 14 BGCL, 8 BRTA, 5 BIWTA and 5 to BTCL. As many as 20 sub-registrars are also included in the list.

Those who got mercy from the TAC are: former chief executive officer of Sylhet City Corporation Saiful Islam and his wife Rozina Sultana Rimi, former additional chief engineer of roads and highway department (RHD) Md Fakhrul Alam Talukder and hif wife Shamsunnahar Chowdhury, former executive engineer of BIWTA Md Saiful Islam and his

wife Sharmina Islam, former deputy assistant engineer (DAE) of BIWTA Abu Bakar Siddique and his wife Fazila Khatun, DAE of BIWTA Md Jahirul Islam and his wife Afroza Khanom, assistant engineer of BIWTA AH Md Farhaduzzaman, Ferdouse Jahan sub-registrar Abdul Malek Kazi, former divisional forest officer Dewan Jafrul Hasan, deputy manager Md Zillur Rahman, former project director (mechanical ) of Chittagong

On July 30 last year, the caretaker government appointed Justice Habibur Rahman Khan, a retired justice of High Court as chairman and Maj Gen (retd)Manzur Rashid Khan and former Comptroller of Auditor General (CAG) Asif Ali as members of the Truth and Accountability
Commission, popularly known as Truth Commission.
