Our strong protest and condemn against the threatening to kill the development worker, Mr. Lalit C. Chakma, Executive Director of SAS

Mr. Lalit C. Chakma, Member of National Council of Sushasaner Jonno Procharavijan (SUPRO) and Executive Director of Strategic Actions Society (SAS) was threatened to be killed by an unknown person  from a mobile (number is 01815673110) on 03 October 2008 at 10:24 a.m while he was attending a meeting called by the youths in his native village. This kind of threatening to Mr. Lalit C. Chakma, a committed development worker, is a crime against the humanity and direct violation of general people's rights. SAS strongly condemn it and protest against this kind of heinous act of the criminals. At the same time, SAS strongly demands to the Deputy Commissioner to stop the unhealthy and anti-environmental initiative of the establishment of brickfield over the motherland of SAS and Mr. Lalit C. Chakma.

Note that, "Sonaichari" is a name of a village under the Kawkhali Upazilla of Rangamati Hill District. A number of 162 families live in this village. This type of threatening to him begins when he has started organizing local peoples against the initiative of establishing a brickfield by a group of businessmen along with some local influential leaders in the middlemost of this village. On behalf of the villagers, written application along with the demand to stop this kind of anti-environmental, anti people and unhealthy initiative has already been submitted to Deputy Commissioner of Rangamati Hill District. However, before that the villagers have informed to the local UP Chairman and businessmen about their objections and both parties discussed several times. But the initiators unitarily announce anyhow to establish the brickfield without taking the concerns of local people. The owners of the brickfield are locally powerful. Therefore, they become very arrogant toward the local people for putting application to Deputy Commissioner against the establishment of brickfield and started threatening the local people.

In relation to this, Betbunia Union Parishad Chairmen Aungsui Prue Chowdhury, his allies Md Manir Uddin, Nilamoni Chakma and some business partners from Raozan area have been pressurizing and threatening Mr. Lalit C. Chakma to keep himself away from his villager's side. The said businessmen have already finalized their preparation for establishment of brickfield in keeping the poor villagers under pressure and fair and making them dumb to achieve their interest. Recently, we are informed that in order to frighten the villagers they have surrounded the green paddy field with hired force and established their command in the area.

Strategic Actions Society (SAS) is urging to humanitarian, sympathetic, conscious and environmentalist individual and organizations to come forward against this kind of anti-environment, anti people interest activities.
