Minus 2: Accomplished.

Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman are now out of their respective jails. If you are one who pays attention to scores, I'd say right now Khaleda Zia is 0.5 points ahead of the caretaker government: she was adament that Tarique be released first, and the CTG blinked first. As a result, Tarique was freed ahead of her.

The image on the left is an orchid: "
Dendrobium Begum Khaleda Zia"--a hybrid orchid grown at the Singapore Botanical Garden and named in her honor.

Why this, and why now? Those of you old enough will remember this slogan from the Ershad days: "Mahmudul Hasan-er choritro, phuler moto pobitro." So perhaps we will hear that again--after all, she has also declared that her sons have not done anything illegal.

After 372 days of incarceration, Mrs. Zia got to meet with Tarique Rahman for a short while. After which, Tarique left Dhaka for London. Before that, Mrs. Zia officially announced that Tarique Rahman will not be involved in politics for 2 to 3 years, until he is fully cured.

The fact is, this was a condition of Tarique's release, imposed by the Army and carried out by the CTG. Otherwise, there was no need to announce this in a formal meeting. Mrs. Zia was crying when she announced this.

One scenario being bandied about in Dhaka involves Ershad. The Army and the CTG wants to install a protective barrier in the next government that will protect it from the wrath of the politicians who will be elected and form the next government. Who better than a former general as the president, who would also be the supreme commander of the armed forces?

Moeen U. Ahmed has taken himself out of the running, at least in the public. That leaves very few candidates qualified in the Army's eyes, and Ershad is leading that list for now. I don't know if that is why he has invested some money in a wig and took to coloring his hair again.

But the bottom line is: despite the long delay, the Army got its Minus 2. Sheikh Hasina and Tarique Rahman are out of the country. Khaleda Zia is in country, but she is on bail and it will be yanked if she steps out of the script that has been set for her.

Various other politicians/criminals are also out on bail.

And luiccha Ershad is posturing to become the next president of Bangladesh.

One step forward, 18 steps back.
