Dear Belal Bhai,

I am elated to hear this positive news on Bangladesh--Thanks for sharing this encouraging news with the community!  Indeed, I am very proud of this announcement by the GPI.

In this nation of 140+ million, so many positive developments are taking place--among many negatives--May we all share some positive developments and/or thinking!  Pretty soon, we will be a nation of positive outlook and achievements!  Prof. Yunus, Jafarullah Chowdhury, Fazle Hasan Abed, Mahbubul Alam Chashi and many others believed in the possibilities and potentials of Bangladeshis, and made significant dent in the qualities of lives of millions.  Let's march ahead with the mantra of disseminating positive news and happenings!

DHAKA, May 24, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- -- Bangladesh has ranked first among the nations in South Asia in the grading of peaceful states in 2008, said a study of the Global Peace Index.

According to the study of the Global Peace Index, an independent think tank, Bangladesh placed 86th among 140 countries in the ranking of peaceful nations in 2008, which is ahead of other nations in South Asia, said a statement of Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry Saturday.

Iceland tops the survey of 140 states.

The organization tests each nation against 24 'peacefulness' criteria, including a nation's relations with its neighbors, arms sales and foreign troop developments.

It also takes into account data on a nation's crime rate, its population and the potential for terrorism within its borders.

In the statement, Bangladeshi Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury said, "This only proves what we have been saying for sometime. Today, Bangladesh is an oasis of calm in an otherwise turbulent region. We are at peace with all our neighbors."

"Internationally, we're playing a constructive role as a top UN peacekeeper. At home, political and social violence has declined," he said.

"I'm glad the world is beginning to notice this. Bangladesh is no longer a basket case," he added.
