[chottala.com] IS GENERAL MOIN AN IDAHO?

IS GENERAL MOIN AN IDAHO?
Abid Bahar
The word Potato was spelled wrong by the former US vice President Dan Quell. Since the event of misspelling the popularity of potato has actually increased significantly. Lately, Bangladesh's militarly General in his outside the cantonment public relations with Bangladeshi newspaper editors has even emphasized on the usefulness of eating potatos.  Many 'machi-Bhati Bangladeshi Bangalis' immediately cried out fawl and some even called him the "Potato Head General". But is he an Idaho? Idaho is a US brand of potato specis. Here we wonder, is this General's backed care-taker government was the Eskander Mirza's rule in Pakistan followed by Ayub Khan politics. Ayub Khan as we know through his US backed coup began his political career by similarly arresting the leaders enmass on corruption charges. The political actor for unrest at the timewas not Hasina but her father Sheikh Mujib. His violent protest in the national assemby led to the death
of deputy speaker Shahed Ali to the dissulution of Jukto front led by A.K. Fazlul Haque and Ayub's excuse to led the coup. General Moin is not Ayub Khan but the plot sounds very much the smell of an Idaho potato (made in USA) to me because this General and his care-taker government also has been arresting and killing people in custody on even flimsy charges?

Zoglul Husain says,"Canadian human rights lawyer Attorney William Sloan on 8 March 2008 revealed in a press conference in New York that, in August 2005, an MP and an editor in Dhaka told him that a horrifying political conflict would be developed as a pretext to impose emergency, following which anti corruption drive would be launched, 'minus two' policy would be pursued as was in Pakistan, …and a government would be formed, which would be subservient to the US. Also in 2005, the then US ambassador Harry K Thomas, with a view to briefing their allies internationally, announced that 'third force' … will be in power. And the third force was in power on one-eleven 2007."(1)

Zoglul Husainsays "We have to view the present complex situation from the perspective of our resistance to the US-Israel-India axis. The US is trying to control the region from west of Asia to east of Asia with the help of Israel and India, with Israel more involved in the Middle East and India more involved from Afghanistan to Malayasia."(2)

When the nation needed unity among its people to deal with grave issues such as the effect of global warming, dealing with natural disaster, man-power training, drying up of our rivers due to India's dams over most Bangladeshi rivers, fighting against corruption, Rohingya refugees from Burma, who are the nation's agenda-setters to divide the nation on the issue of trying the 1971 war collaborators, a three dacades old issue? Why the Bangladesh ambassador informs the UN secretary informs the growing demand for the trial of war criminals? Abu Rawsab observes, "… what is the "driving force" behind their "sudden upsurge"? Why they are still vociferously committed to problematizing a resolved issue at a time when the people in Bangladesh are in the brink of famine and a grave political disaster?(3)

Abu Rawsab says "A vigorous search in some prominent Indian think-tanks gives answers to the crucial questions stated above. It seems that India never thinks of Bangladesh as its partner in development but an adversary in it national interest. Depriving Bangladesh from its proper share of water, emasculating Bangladesh's labor market in the overseas particularly in the Middle East through systematic negative propaganda, continuously killing innocent Bangladeshis by BSF, and destroying garments and shrimp market through several shrewd means are some of the examples of India's behavior towards Bangladesh. India's recent diplomatic and military breakthrough with the USA and Israel made it aggressive in implementing certain policies in Bangladesh. One of the policies, as it vociferously declared, is to create a "secular" Bangladesh. As the current quasi-military regime—largely a result of the foreign interference—failed to crack the Islamic
parties in Bangladesh down through corruption charges, several Indian think-tanks vehemently suggested Indian government to use "war crime" issue to politically ostracize Islamic political parties in order to materialize its long-term desired ends. There is a crucial link between the Indian interest and the sudden upsurge of the Sector Commanders Forum.(4)

Is it to divert the nation to a politically pro-Indian issue? We know that in 2003 many intellectual Bangladeshis were taken to US to visit the Idaho potato firms. Who are the nation's agenda-setters? It is true, to be foretold is to be intellectually forearmed.
We can ot be so sure though, as we have a new US ambassador Morearty with seemingy good intentions. But surprisingly, Jacqui Smith Echoes and Condi Rice lately talks vigourously about Terrorism in Bangladesh, while Cherie Blair, the wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, a human rights lawyer arrives in Dhaka to help protect human rights and re-establish democratic practices in Bangladesh. Hasina as usual is also getting ready with her troops to launch a nation wide hunger strike. Now who is there to evaluate the worth of an idaho potato?
