Four Rajshahi University Teachers Released
By Ajoy Roy
For a long time I have not been receiving good news. Today at 5-30 p.m. I
received one of the finest news. One of my friends from Rajshahi rang me
that 4 imprisoned teachers have been released just an hour before. The
President has shown amnesty to 4 convicted teachers unconditionally.
Following this announcement captive teachers namely- Malay Kumar Bhowmik,
Dulal Chandra Biswas, Selim Reza Newton, and Abdullah Al Mamun. After the
release their family members and colleagues received the teachers. Released
teachers claimed that neither they nor their family members sought for
forgiveness to anyone including the army guided Care Taker Government Chief or to the army chief.
It may be recalled that following the unfortunate event in DU campus
involving the students and army, the RU teachers extended their moral
support to the students and brought out a silent procession on August 21. On
the following day there were some violence in side the campus. The
administration thought that RU teachers were involved in it. Accordingly two
senior teachers, Professor Sayedur Rahman Khan and Dr. Abdus Sobhan were
arrested on 24th August and warrant against 4 teachers was issued. On 5th
September other 4 teachers surrendered to the police. They were charged with
offence of violating emergency laws and violence inside the campus. On 5th
December the court punished 4 teachers giving 2 years rigorous imprisonment.
This created resentment among the public in general and to the intellectual
community in particular.
It is learnt that a few DGFI top guys met with the wives of the imprisoned
teachers in the office of the RU VC yesterday at 3 p.m. The close door
meeting continued for over two hours. It is learnt that teachers' wives
appealed to the them for honorable and unconditional release of their
husbands.
I must congratulate our President that he used his office in a noble cause by releasing the convicted teachers. At the same time I will expect that the government or the RU authority will refrain from taking any step against these teachers regarding their continuity of service in the university. It may also be remembered that an appeal against the verdict of the lower court was filed yesterday.
We hope the government will drop all charges against DU teachers andstudents to restore a congenial academic environment in all campuses.
