Does the Army really care who leads BNP?

E-Bangladesh is reporting that DGFI has engineered a coup to remove the two top officials of the pro-Khaleda faction of BNP, and in violation of the BNP constitution, assisted ex-Finance minister Saifur Rahman to assume the leadership.

Amader Shomoy is reporting that Khandker Delwar Hossain checked into a hospital under the pretext of illness, but he can not be located any more. Hannan Shah, Mrs. Zia's staunchest defender, has also vanished.

Let's expand the picture

Last night ex-BNP MP Akhtaruzzaman told BBC that Khandker Delwar Hossain was being threatened by an intelligence agency, which the government denied. BDNews is now reporting that Mr. Akhtaruzzaman provided a written statement:

Former BNP MP Md Akhteruzzaman Monday claimed that two senior officials of an intelligence agency had asked party secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain to leave his post in 24 hours. In a written statement to the media, he said the officials had allegedly asked Delwar to go to the house of former finance minister M Saifur Rahman by 7:30pm Monday and declare Saifur the party's acting chairperson and Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan secretary general. But Akhteruzzaman, himself a former military officer, did not specify which intelligence agency the officials belong to. bdnews24.com contacted several senior government officials and advisers, including information adviser Mainul Hosein, for comment. Mainul only said: "I would not comment on it as I did not read the statement."
Dainik Dinkal reported Monday morning that after the rebel factions failed to gain traction, a powerful lobby was planning to revamp the Minus-2 formula, with Khaleda and Hasina as party leaders but outside future governments.

Two days ago, DuDoK failed to find any involvement of Khaleda in a corruption case.

Last night, RAB suddenly arrested 9 islamic militants, two of whom allegedly launched the grenade attack on Hasina.

We had Moeen go through a huge charade to set up a meeting with Joy, and possibly with his sister Putul in Florida. This fits nicely with the story in Dinkal about a possible compromise with Hasina and Khaleda. National unity government with Hasina and Khaleda on the sidelines and tacitly supporting Moeen as the president?

Then this bombshell in E-Bangladesh. Hmm. The Bangladeshi blogosphere is unanimous about one thing: the CTG is not a harmonious monolith: it has its own factions. We know that the army is also split.

Lt. Gen. Masud, the architect of 1/11 (the credit for which is being claimed by Gen. Moeen) is hugely popular among field-grade (Major/Lt. Col/Col) officers, and Gen. Moeen does not like this fact. Lt. Gen. Masud is the brother-in-law of Khaleda Zia's brother Syed Iskendar, and while he has protected Mr. Iskendar, he has not shown any favors to Mrs. Zia.

Lastly, E-Bangladesh mentions that two DGFI officers, both brigadier generals, took the lead in the BNP forced re-org. Brigadier generals do not act on their own.

The question is, who is calling the shots? Moeen? Doesn't really make sense. He was supposed to be making overtures to Khaleda and Hasina, not deposing Khaleda's chosen man.

Masud? If he is, this is almost a declaration of war between Moeen and Masud.

At the very least, this will mean a re-org in the army as well. It remains to be seen which M will be minused.
