  • Excerpts: UK calls for national reconciliation in Bangladesh; Bangladesh will continue to be saddled with the kind of problems which led to imposition of Emergency unless there is a national reconciliation, the British High Commissioner in Dhaka has said. Asserting that the poll-bound nation was at a "crossroad" with developments in the upcoming months to either make or break the country, High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury urged all political parties and the interim government to work together with "a single purpose". "Unless you have national reconciliation or national unity on a single purpose, you will continue to have differences, disputes and doubts that have put you in the current situation," Bangladesh-born Anwar told a reception hosted by Diplomatic Correspondents' Association of Bangladesh last night. "Bangladesh now stands at a crossroad of breaking or making. It's a crossroad of beginning of a new journey," he said, according to media reports.........MORE
  • Excerpts: Dhaka hunts for new JMB chief; A Sylhet-based cable TV network -- Sylhet Cable System -- aired a message for three days till Friday, urging people to help law enforcers arrest Saidur Rahman alias Abu Zafar. In the message, people were requested to inform RAB-9 headquarters in Sylhet if any one knew Saidur's whereabouts. The message also said anybody helping law enforcers in arresting Saidur would be rewarded. Declared a terrorist outfit by the US and banned in Bangladesh after the US pressurised the then government of prime minister Khaleda Zia, JMB draws a part of its leadership from JI, which shared power with Zia during 2001-06. Saidur Rahman, a former Amir of Habiganj district JI, was in Sylhet city and running JMB activities till the arrest of Shaikh Abdur Rahman and his family members on March 2 last year. Saidur Rahman left the city within hours of the arrests and remains untraced. A number of attempts by law enforcers to nab him have gone in vain, the newspaper said.....MORE
  • Excerpts: Beware of Earth Foundation!;It has been learnt that Earth Foundation Chairman Khaled Hossain has been using the army's name to carry out all these above mentioned schemes. He goes around saying that the Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed is very close to him. Earth Foundation claims that Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed was the Chief Guest at a joint function of Earth Foundation and the Machine and Tools held on June 5 at Radisson Hotel and was also the Chief Guest at the Earth Filter launching programme. However, it was later found out that no such programme took place at Radisson on June 5. Even on August 17 no such programme took place. So the question of the Army Chief being the Chief Guest does not even arise. Earth Foundation Chairman and Executive Director Mohammed Khaled Hossain has been unavailable for comment regarding these controversial activities and the allegations against his organisation. Whenever attempts are made to contact him over the phone, his secretary says that he is busy in a meeting. The secretary took this correspondent's phone number and said, "Sir will contact you," but no contact was made. His mobile phone rings, but he does not reply. He never comes directly in front of the media. He pulls the strings from behind the scenes......MORE
  • Excerpts: Combating misgovernance; Lessons from the caretaker's intervention; Misgovernance took a heavy toll, with all menacing setbacks. Derailed politico-bureaucratic leadership set the tone of moral erosion and societal degeneration. Recent history shows that misgovernance had led the country towards inevitable destruction. Democracy could not flourish in the midst of the politician-made humanitarian crisis in a corruption-ridden country. As the years passed, the unrelenting problem of misgovernance was exacerbated to a point of no return. This was the time when disorder was the order, irregular was regular, and Machiavellism was the political culture. The question became -- whether Bangladesh was a failed or a fragile state? The caretaker government is now going all-out to erase the sullying marks of misgovernance left by the immediate past government. It is determined to run the show with utmost sincerity, missionary zeal and unequivocal commitment. Its assumption of responsibility to rewrite the future of the country that stood on the heap of misgovernance was a historical necessity. The citizens repose faith in the present government, and consider it benevolent and a pathfinder. The caretaker has had to combat crosscutting explosive problems linked with the misgovernance that had bruised and battered public life. They were like the heroes in the folktales, as the golden men took position to strike at the monster symbolised by the blatant misgovernance. Its intervention raised a glimmer of hope among ordinary masses and was welcomed by electronic media and civil societies. There has been an advocacy campaign for the eradication of corruption, as evidenced by a discussion held in Shilpakala Academy on July 14, followed by the concert in co-operation with ATN Bangla Multimedia production Limited..........MORE
  • Excerpts: Analyst agrees with report on ULFA outsourcing suicide attacks; The Stratfor report further, says: "The two prime suspects in the Hyderabad bombing belonged to the Bangladesh-based Islamist militant group Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islami, which is known to have a working relationship with ULFA and other northeastern insurgent groups, and with Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency." Mahanta said: "We have to talk it out with the Bangladesh Government as well as with the Myanmar Government because I believe that all these issues are trans-national. These countries are helping the insurgent groups." The report further says: "India's northeastern insurgent outfits and militant Islamist groups regularly traverse India's extremely porous border with Bangladesh. This is an area where ideology, religion and ethnicity hold little or no regard, as each militant group works with another to promote its cause." Mahanta said: "The people of Assam, irrespective of caste, creed and language want a peaceful atmosphere. So, the ULFA must read the message of the people of Assam. They want the violence to stop. The sooner the ULFA realizes this, the better it is for them"......MORE
  • Excerpts: Unsolicited 'advice'; As usual the visiting dignitary from a western country finding no other issues "advised' the government to open outdoor politics without realising the significance and effect of any such move. While making the 'advice' he appears to have totally ignored the historical steps taken by the administration towards holding of a meaningful election for peaceful transfer of power to an elected government. He seems to be totally oblivious of the fact that the present administration is at the helm of affairs for a mission with popular support to get rid of a situation created by the corrupt and power hungry politicians who made a mess of the country in every aspect. I do not understand what amusement these western countries (particularly two) including a few of their paper organisations called 'European Union' get by showering unnecessary and unsolicited advice on us as to how to run the government, how to do politics, how to behave with the corrupt and the criminals etc. We are no longer in a position to listen to the so 'called 'advice from the West and it is, therefore, high time for them to stop this evil practice......MORE
  • Excerpts: Communalism phobia in Bangladeshi politics; The long two centuries of alien British rule during the period of 1757 to 1947 could hardly make big dent in the deeply embedded tradition, despite poverty and backwardness that helped in 1947 to curve out this chunk of land from the rest of Bengal and British India through democratic process to form then East Bengal/East Pakistan. The post 1971 independent Bangladesh achieved though through a war against West Pakistan in 1971 was nothing but what our forefathers won the land and geography as East Bengal/East Pakistan. The romanticism and ignorance of the ruling class that followed the 1971 independence made the long embedded Islamic spiritualism a mater of despise for their fallacy of equating 'vanquished' Pakistan here with Islamic and Muslim ethos and tradition. Naturally this was a shocking experience to the right thinking Muslims........MORE
  • Excerpts: Hizb ut-Tahrir Target Bangladesh; The current army backed caretaker government is showing huge complacency to Hijb ut-Tahrir as they're violating emergency rule by organizing their ongoing protest on the cartoon row in Bangladesh. More than 100 countries have already banned Hijb ut-Tahrir for its fundementalist activity. Bangladesh has yet to ban this fundamentalist outfit. We're sharing this investigative article with our readers that shows how Hijb ut-Tahrir is targeting Bangladesh. Wake up Bangladesh!!!
