Ghulam Azam symbol of vicious crimes (Updated)
Dhaka, Feb 19 (Priyo.com): Jamaat-e-Islami leader, Ghulam Azam, appeared as a symbol of vicious crimes during the Liberation War in 1971, a prosecutor on Tuesday told the International Crimes Tribunal-1.
"Ghulam Azam had prior knowledge of any atrocity committed in besieged Bangladesh as somehow he collaborated with the Pakistan occupation army," said prosecutor Sultan Mahmud Simon while placing his arguments.
Ghulam Azam as head of Jamaat-e-Islami in occupied Bangladesh had close connection with the junta both before and after March in 1971, the prosecutor told the tribunal.
In support of his contention, Simon referred to a book written by accused Ghulam Azam titled 'Jibone Ja Dekhlum' (what I saw in life).
While comparing the role of political parties like Muslim League, Nezami Islam and PDP, the prosecutor said that as the only cadre-based and regimented political party, Jamaat-e-Islami and its vigilante groups like Razakar, members of Peace Committee, Al Badr and Al Shams had vehemently opposed the Liberation War and collaborated with the occupation army in committing atrocities across the country.
Regarding the mass killing of the intellectuals at the very end of the Liberation War, prosecutor Simon said that Ghulam Azam was the mastermind behind the massacre after sensing the ignominious defeat of Pakistan to the freedom fighters he branded as miscreants and Indian infiltrators.
He said Ghulam Azam had executed the conspiracy he planned by engaging his vigilante groups -- Al Badr and Al Shams -- to make the newly-emerged Bangalee nation intellectuallybankrupt and also retaliating the disgrace of defeat.
